Jack -“I don’t believe in destiny,” to which Locke replies, “Yes, you do. You just don’t know it yet.” (“Exodus, Part 1)

— shoegirl927

When we first figured out what the newspaper said we pretty much decided it was either Michael or Ben….and why was that? Because supposedly this person had a teenage son. We thought maybe Alex could be incorrectly assumed to be boy and of course Michael had Walt. Now the producers said that they were going to rewrite the obituary but they did not(shocker!!!!). So I guess the questions regarding Locke return from the island are the following….

How did he die? How did he get to the mainland? Was he able to walk after leaving the island? Why was Locke using the alias Jeremy Bentham? Why must Locke’s body be returned to the island? Will going back resurrect him? Will going back make him seemingly a part of the island in the way that Christian (and possibly Claire) have become? And lastly when did he have a son?

The body of Jeremy Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 am in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue.

Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim’s loft.

Concerned for tenants’ safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room.

According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Latham (sic) is survived by one teenage son.

Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening.”

I also thought that johns obituary was a big mystery, so much so that I registered a fancy name and decided to post a theory instead of just reading everyone else’s. Since shoegirl beat me to the topic, I’ll just add on to hers rather than make a new one.

There are three big mysteries that I can see, which can lead to two different theories. Perhaps they can be simply explained away by someone as “just how things work” (read on, you’ll see), but they are nagging at me.

    1. The newspaper article. Was it an article or an obituary, I forget. If it was an obituary, then who placed it? Doesn’t someone need to contact the paper and provide all the details and pay for it? On the other hand, if it was a regular article, I can understand it being in the paper as a morbid slice of life thing, but theres another problem with this, which is….

    2. the details. John’s fake name must have had an entire fake life if the police investigators provided the details to the paper. A regular shmoe wouldn’t make up details like having a son. The other option is that someone “in the know” wrote the article as a cover up.

    3. the funeral. A funeral ain’t cheap. Even a bare bones service as John apparently had, you still have to pay for the coffin, the building, the suit he wore, etc. So, who paid?

As I said this leads to two different theories.

    1. John really did die one way or another, his assumed identity somehow went through the background check and turned up a son who took care of the arrangements without ever noticing his ‘dad’ was a different person.

    2. (or, the one that makes sense in Lost-world) John somehow faked his death (or If he really died but has the intention of coming back to life on the island as some people think, that still counts) with the intention of bringing everyone together again. He had help from another party to take care of the arrangements, either Sayid or Ben, or both since they seem to work together now.

The son part is the most intriguing issue here. The obit sounded like Michael’s, as Michael was already shown disguising his identity and living in the shadows. He was also the only one with a teenage son, and it could have been his mother who arranged the funeral in the black neighborhood.

Locke being there (or even Sawyer or Desmond in the alt endings) is a shocker. I think the writers may have changes stories a few times before settling for Locke, which means the ending was once much more open ended. It being Locke changes everything.
