My comprehensive Lost theory:

The island is the mythical Lemuria. For those that don’t know, Lemuria is “a hypothetical ‘lost land’ variously located in the Indian and Pacific Oceans” (wikipedia). Very similar to Atlantis and allegedly coexisting with Atlantis for an extended period of time, Lemuria was considered the creation location of mankind and eventually, “At its peak of civilization, the Lemurian people were both highly evolved and very spiritual” (lumeria.net)

Lemuria was known to have special magnetic properties as a result of a magnetic implosion (think of the magnetic anomalies of the island) ,http://www.spiritmythos.org/earth/EC/lemuria.html. The people of Lemuria were said to have psychic powers and the ability to teleport (people appearing in dreams, the whispers, people appearing all over the island, Jacob’s apparent control over Christian Shephard, Claire/Eko’s psychic) . They are said to have taught the Egyptian’s hieroglyphics (the Swan station) and to have possessed advanced technology up to millennia beyond our current age (the mysterious wheel that we just saw Ben crank that moved the island).

The current island members/hostiles/others, Richard Alpert, etc., are remnants from the good faction of Lemurian civilization (“we’re the good guys”). The Lemurian society was said to be separated into two factions—essentially good and evil/greedy. In their advanced knowledge, Lemurians learned of the Valenzetti Equation, aka the numbers, which predicted the exact date of the when humanity would destroy itself.

With this knowledge, they experimented with time travel in order to give them an insurance policy should they fail to prevent humanity from destroying itself—they’d be allowed to go back and right the course.

To achieve this, the Lemurians essentially created a particle accelerator that allowed them the ability of time travel.

Now, as stated in mythology, the Lemurian civilization was wiped out for the most part by an active volcano (as young Ben’s DI teacher says, ‘we know there once was an active volcano on the island’).

A few survivors (Richard Alpert? Jacob?) survived and formed a small village on the island. For some reason that I can’t quite explain yet, the survivors moved the island into the future with the island likely appearing right from under “The Black Rock.” The use of the particle accelerator essentially gave the island special magnetic properties. Perhaps the presence of healing stone similar to those said to be on the island of Atlantis existed/exists as well on the island.

Of course, this marks the first time a Hanso was/is on the island. Hanso and his crew explored the island noting the unique special qualities of the island. Somehow, eventually, Hanso and/or his posterity found their way off the island or got people to come to the island.

These people were essentially the Dharma Initiative, created to conduct experiments on the what makes the island special and hopefully use its forces to aid humanity. To do this, they essentially had to construct the multiple island stations. This is where I believe Widmore was commissioned and learned of the powers of the island (healing, time travel, etc.)

The Dharma Initiative eventually found the particle accelerator, the numbers, etc., Somehow along the way, they setup The Swan Station and The Orchid Station to manipulate to particle accelerator and/or the magnetic anomalies on the island. They really didn’t know what they were doing causing multiple “incidences” creating worm holes and magnetic madness throughout the island.

Here’s where things get crazy. Somehow, I believe the Dharma Initiative’s experiments either caused humanity to destroy itself or nearly destroy the time travel process for the Lemurians on the island or most likely, Widmore’s possession of the powers of the island cause humanity to destroy itself. This forces Richard and co. to loop back and forth through time over and over again slowly changing things over time in order to prevent the end of the world.

To do this, things eventually get complicated enough where they put the right people in the rights positions throughout the entire show (distinct people being guided to be on the plane, etc.). They are slowly putting the pieces of the puzzle together one way through at a time.

Jacob, because of his psychic powers, is able to see these many times through and has specific lists of people that need to do certain things this time around. People like Desmond may have psychic abilities as well in being able to see the many times Charlie was killed in the past.

Ultimately, the show will end with The Other (Lemurians) led by Aaron and Jin & Sun’s child battling Widmore’s people for the earths survival, ultimately failing but getting closer and Richard traveling back in time to start the entire process again.

first off i want to point out that i just joined. i have been viewing from afar for a while.

i have always had an atlantis-like-feeling about this island but never knew of lemuria, never heard of it till now. I looked up lemuria on wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemuria_(continent)). I found the following passsage about a short story written called Lost Legacy. I wonder if any of the creators ever read this story.

In Robert A. Heinlein’s short story “Lost Legacy”, three ordinary people rediscover innate human psychic abilities. They immediately come under attack from evil (but human) hidden elites, and are forced take refuge among a hidden colony of ancient masters in Mt. Shasta. Here they find that benevolent rebels of ancient times stored the secret history of humanity in Mt. Shasta and other mountains, to aid in humanity’s eventual path to redemption. This history includes the rise and fall of the lost empire Mu, due to arrogance and the pursuit of power rather than enlightenment. The fall of Mu is said to have doomed humanity to the current ‘Dark Age’, in which the evil hidden elites forcefully maintain the ignorance of the masses.

i know this is not identical to the shows situation but i had to join just to point out this passage cause it struck a chord with me

anyways - i really like this theory and think you are on to something

Hightaiyed, you’ve put a lot of thought into this. Good work. But I just hope you’re not right because I can’t stand the supernatural, hate superstition, and don’t believe in magic. I’m not a big fan of the paranormal, don’t support the idea of alien visitations, and generally avoid science-fiction, unless it has pretty girls (like kate. or Seven of Nine). To quote a character from Charles Dickens’ Hard Times, “Now, what I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts.”

    So Bah Humbug.

P.S. I don’t know how else to explain the ancient-looking heiroglyphs or the dead people showing up at all hours, in strange places…so you’ve gone further than I could have.

Very interesting. I like it alot. The ending you’ve thought up seems a little random however. Can you shed any more light on how you may think it will play out?

Something that supports your idea, Kelvin Inman. He taught Sayid how to torture Tariq in Iraq, even though he spoke Arabic himself. Some have suggested that Kelvin was already dharma and was teaching him things that he would need later, though to be honest we’ve never really seen him torture somone successfully. He tortured Sawyer who was innocent, well innocent of stealing the medicine, and Sayid tortured Ben who didn’t break.
