In There’s No Place Like Home Pt. 1 we see the Coast Guard plane in the first scene. One question this proposes is not only how did they find the island, but how did they land? Unless there is some other way to do it that I’m not aware of (please share if you have ideas), they had to have landed somewhere. Could this be the purpose for the mysterious runway that is being built in 3x02, The Glass Ballerina? Juliet tells Sawyer and Kate that they are breaking rocks to build a runway but she isn’t sure why. Perhaps they finished and we’ll see it next week! If you want more information about this runway, search for “Quarry” on Lostpedia.
Below is an aerial view of the runway in the deleted scenes on the DVD.
My only problem is how a plane this big
is going to fit on that tiny runway.
Another possibility is the plane landing on some island nearby (?) and then ferrying the O6 over on a boat.
Or maybe Ben and John successfully move the island into the future where the runway is completed and can readily handle such a plane.
Or they just beam them up.
Anyway…
I have been mulling this over for a week now and I just want to know why now? Oceanic Airlines had to be in on the planting of the fake plane in the ocean. They obviously are in on the whole story that the O6 are sharing. (Or at least Karen, the Oceanic publicist is.) She must have helped with the staging of the photograph of the 6 getting off of the island (unless it is indeed real.)
So in conclusion (I’m sorry if this is simply a bunch of scattered thoughts…) we have two possibilities for the Coast Guard plane.
- It lands on the island.
- It lands near the island.
Any thoughts?
(Perhaps this is completely foolish to be bothered by this because I’m sure this will be easily answered next episode.)
A few more unrelated things that I feel do not need their own theory to post. (I am completely against clogging the latest theories page…)
- I am rewatching season one with a friend who is watching it for the first time and am delighted to be finding some subtle foreshadowing. In 1x21 Charlie is trying to calm Aaron down and this correspondence takes place between Hurley and Charlie:
charlie: The itsy-bitsy spider climbed up the spout, down came the rain and drowned the spider out…
HURLEY: Dude, it’s washed — washed the spider out. Unless it’s some kind of British version?
charlie: Oh, okay. Down came the rain and washed the spider — oh, bollocks, shhhh, shhh, shhh.
And my neighbor immediately turns to me “Is that a foreshadowing?” and it hit me and all I could say was “Oh my God!” and laugh. :)
- Jack has been referred to as a broken record twice in LOST history. The first time occurring in 1x07. Coincidence? Or a subtle hint that Jack is reliving a part of his life? (I still don’t know if I buy that theory… But I’ll humor anyone who is an avid fan of Jack having been on the island pre-crash.)
And for fun, watch these videos on YouTube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=uYZn8RN67tI (there are 4 total)
I thought they were funny, but maybe I’m just desperate. ;)

The Oceanic 6 were rescued from the Indonesian Island of Sumba. Obviously this is a cover up and we don’t yet know how they get off the Island and how they end up on a Coast Gurad plan. I highly doubt the Coast Guard actually rescued the O6 from the Island itself.
When the O6 are on the Coast Guard plane they are all cleaned and wearing fresh atire. I wouldn’t have thought the plane would pick them up from the island, drop them off to get washed, then resume back to mainland.
I genuinely believe they get off via the zodiac and that the picture shown in the press conference is real. Obviously the only gap needing of a plug is how they get from the island/freighter to here.
i fully agree with gaz, Lamer you may be one of the cutest girls on lost-theories, and i hate to disagree with you, but i think the 06 use the zodiac to get from the freighter or island and find a nearby island (Sumba). I also think its quite obvious that the freighter will be blown up, this is possibly how jin and michael die, who knows.
i think that the o6 genuinely make it to sumba isle and are rescued there. my question is how oceanic reconciles this with the planted plane at the bottom of the ocean. or was this addressed already.
and shasty is right lamer is the cutest girl on l-t. sorry if this is creepy, lamer.
Creepy indeed!
You RAISE a very BIG question. Who picked em up and why? we dont know yet!!. We do know the Coast Guard brings them in. Explain that anyone… We havent seen any real guvrmnt iflnc “yet” have we?. I do agree with you Lamer,, That this will be easily answered. Buttttttttt!!Whhhhhooooooooo!!!!!. and y. The second theory sucked. why do that explain. YR HOT +1
That aircraft is a Lockheed HC-130 Hercules, and would have NO trouble landing on that strip. After all, one landed on an aircraft carrier with no tail hook! (And took off again with no catapult.) The C-130 is a remarkable aircraft indeed.
