[The mysterious man] constantly refers to Locke as “Mr. Locke”, this is huge, the only other person to do that in the show was Walt as a boy on the island.”

— Andfound4815

My theory is that the man who claims his name is Matthew Abaddon in the first episode of Season 4 (the tall black man who talks to Hurley in the mental hospital) is actually Walt in the future.

When the character talks to Hurley, pretending to be a lawyer from Oceanic and offers to give him an upgrade to a better facility, one that overlooks the ocean (maybe the island?). Hurley says he doesn’t want to go and asks:

Who did you say you were again? Can I see a business card.”

and the man, reaches into his pocket and says, “I must have left them at home.” This is the first clue that he is not who he says he is.

Later on the same person shows up in the past at the hospital that John Locke was staying at after he fell from the window and was going through rehab. When he talks to Locke there are several more clues that point to his actual identity as Walt: 1) He constantly refers to Locke as “Mr. Locke”, this is huge, the only other person to do that in the show was Walt as a boy on the island. 2) He tells John to go on the walkabout, as if he knows what will end up happening (hints that he has some connection with the future) 3) He tells John that he went on a walkabout once (code for trip to the island at this point?) and it was like a miracle… this might be Walt referencing his time spent on the island

Also interesting is that this mysterious figure was involved in recruiting Naomi, Frank, Miles, Daniel, and Charlotte to join the freighter team that goes to the island. All of these people have been helping the survivors of the crash and are the good guys on the freighter team. Walt might have recruited them to help everyone out.

Also despite the many gaps in time when this character shows up, from when Locke falls out of the window then years later when Hurley is back from the island and back in the mental institution, the show never makes any attempt to make “Matthew Abaddon” look different in any way, instead he always looks exactly the same. I think that is more evidence that this is a person that is hopping around to and from different points in time.

Anyway, my theory is that person is future Walt.

very plausible, I’m actually starting to think he may be

I like it, but a note, we’ve seen Abanon before Hurley’s episode this season.

sounds like a pretty good assumption to me

I don’t know. If that’s the case, the casting director needs to be fired, because Walt would never look like Abbadon in the future. Sure, they’re both black, but I think the specific ethnicity is all wrong…

Corrected the first encounter thing… also I think that despite the way he looks, its actually a shrewd casting move that fits the think like a producer mentality, because Walt, the little kid actor, is growing up and hasn’t been used much because he doesn’t really look the same. So to convert the character to future Walt would allow them to continue using him and the mystery that surrounds his character without the problems of using a child actor who doesn’t look exactly the same.

most awesome theory, I thought of that too when I watched that episode!!

i have to admit i clicked on this theory thinking that this might be worth a laugh.

however you put foreward some very valid points about abaddon calling him Mr. Locke. also didn’t walt have a pretty good relationship with hurley on the island?

however abaddon and walt don’t really look the same other than being black. abaddon and walt have very different facial structures and micheal and abaddon look totally different not like how a father and son would look similar to each other.

This theory works on the basis that Walt will grow up to become a time traveller that, at that particular age in his adult life, chooses this wonderful power of time travel to cryptically pop up in Locke’s life to give him a half-message about going on a Walkabout.

Well done, Walt. You really made the most of that skill. (Prior to sending a team of people to an Island to wipe out everyone on it. Including “Mr. Locke”.)

Abaddon calling Locke “Mr. Locke” is appropriate. His surname is Locke and he is a Mr. In the regular world, it’s the right thing to refer to people you don’t know as Mr. or Mrs or Miss in a professional sense.

I like this theory. I don’t care if they look alike or not… the parts are played by actors who aren’t related to each other. Makes sense to me.

Well, there are certain rules about the way Lost characters time travel that none of us completely understand, so it’s possible that Walt is somehow limited in what he can do. So far none of the people in the show who have traveled in time have done anything drastic, rather they’ve been prevented from doing it (think Desmond and the “course correcting” episode, or Michael aka Kevin Johnson not being able to die).

Another possibility is that Walt is not exactly time traveling, but using his weird special abilities that he might be able to better control in the future. He’s already popped up in places he shouldn’t be all the time in the show (in Shannon’s tent that one time when he was all wet, after Locke was shot, etc)… and he was always cryptic in those encounters, makes sense that future Walt would be like that too.

Here is a link to an interesting theory about Walt’s time travel abilities and more…. http://lost-theories.com/theories/2007/aug/25/ben-walt-and-danny-torrance-sh/ I kind of agree with some of that, I think Walt eventually gets to the point where he can move around in time as easily as Richard and Ben, but not until he is older

I doubt this theory will come to pass in all likelihood, however it is quite creative. I do not believe there is any correlation between the two, however I recall the theory by RJ which you linked above, and I loved it!

In that respect I could certainly see some correlation. Nice work! +1

I certainly haven’t missed the bad gateways! sigh!

    Wow…I like this theory.

I was with friends and jokingly threw out the Abbaddon/Walt idea, and we all laughed, and this was a couple of weeks ago. But you bring up some awesome connections that I didn’t think of.

Thanks, AndFound, even as I read the theory and the comments I never would have correlated this to my old theory, but it definitely fits. If it is okay with you, I may do some work and connect our theories together a bit. I can definitely add some of the new Richard and Ben evidence. It is hard to beleive that the theory I threw out there just to think out side the box is actually growing in credulity!

Oh, and it is great to see other people pimping my theory besides just Lockeko and I!!! (If you weren’t around last summer, it was a running joke for he and I to post links to the theory.)

RMJ I know it was a joke, but yesterday the original shining was on either hbo or cinemax, and as I was watching it, I have to admit that your theory seems to be spot on. This theory really could be tied to that one to make a great explanation of Jacob and Abaddon. Maybe part of Walt’s special ability and of certain others on the island is to “shine”

  16. Andfound4815 May 24, 2008 12:23 p.m. Comment: 16

Yeah RJM, go for it. I don’t know how much of the Shining translates over to Lost, I’ll leave that up to you, but there is definitely something going on with people jumping around in time like you suggested, and if Walt is Abaddon like I think he is… that would just be more evidence
