Ben is even more of an evil mastermind than he seems. I think he moved the island on purpose so that the plane would crash on to it. In the first episode of season 3, Juliet has her book club meeting when what seems to be an earthquake shakes the island. This was not an earthquake, it was the island moving. You’ll notice that everyone runs outside and stares at the sky like they’re looking at it for the first time. Ben is one of the last ones to come outside and as soon as he gets out there the plane crashes and splits into two factions. Also, Ben already has a plan. He gives immediate orders to go and try to blend in with the survivors.
I think we are going to find that the Dharma Initiative was created to be a community that would live forever on the island. But, the island was already inhabited by others to begin with. I haven’t really filled in all the holes of my theory yet, but I think if you die on the island you live forever. I know that doesn’t make sense at all, but i’ll show you. When Desmond was blown from the implosion of the hatch he definitely died. After his death he begins to experience future visions and seems to be happy. He is shown tossing rocks into the ocean while John is giving his big speech to rescue Jack, Sawyer, and Kate, but strangely enough Desmond told Hurley about the speech before it happened. I also think Michael died on the island because when he goes back into society he tries to kill himself multiple times and can’t. That is because he is already dead. Now John, I am not sure when John died it could have been when the hatch exploded or when Ben shot him, but I am almost positive that John is also dead. All in all, I think there is going to be a combination of people who died in the actual crash and people who died on the island. So far I think all the characters whom the island talks to are actually “dead”. The whispers, the visions that only some characters experience explains which characters are in fact dead.

As for your first paragraph, I’m skeptical. I don’t think the plane would have crashed there if not for Desmond’s actions (or lack thereof). And Desmond and Ben certainly weren’t working together.
As for the second paragraph, it’s a fun idea and certainly worth of consideration. But I still maintain that all this can be explained through the warping of time. –Not that these two ideas can’t co-exist…
The “earthquake” was, I’m sure, the result of a 747 passing directly overhead at extremely low altitude as it crashed. Trust me, I grew up next to an air force base. When a C130 passes by at 500 feet goin in for a landing it will make the whole house shake, no problem. 5x closer and stuff starts falling off the walls. No earthquake, Just a jetliner man.
Your first paraghraph I’m gonna have to disagree on… but I think you may have something with your second paragraph, it just may need a little work.
The earthquake was the hatch imploding. I also disagree with the first paragraph. But I do like the idea of Michael being already dead! I’m still not over his murderous rampage. You are right about the hatch implosion, Locke and anyone in/near it should be dead.
yingirl, the hatch imploded some time after the crash, not when the plane was crashing… remember how there were survivors from the plane in the hatch at the time it went boom?
and as for this earthquake, i think its pretty obvious its a combination of the electromagnetic properties unleashed by the button not being pushed in time & the plane flying so low overhead. no moving the island in my opinion.
