Sun’s settlement couldn’t possibly buy pop’s company. What would she get from Oceanic Airlines, 1 or 2 million dollars, tops?

Sun’s settlement couldn’t possibly buy pop’s company. What would she get from Oceanic Airlines, 1 or 2 million dollars, tops?
And even if you take into account any money she had already inherited from her family, it would hardly cover the buy out cost for a major corporation such as Paik Heavy Industries.
No, she had to have help. There had to be a 2nd, maybe even 3rd party involved.
Possible financiers? For one, how about Hurley? He supposedly got rid of his fortune, correct? I’m sure he set up his family pretty well, but could he have given the rest to Sun? Remember, he didn’t just take his lottery winnings and start spending it on fried chicken and comic books. It seemed like he was a savvy investor, who bought profitable companies (including Locke’s box company). He could have sold those off at a profit and given those assets to Sun as well. Could this explain why Hurley visited Sun in South Korea?
The next 2 that come to mind are Penny and Mr. Widmore. What their exact motivations could be, I’m not exactly sure, but they definitely have cash to facilitate a corporate buyout.
And what about Ben? He may not be as rich as the previous suspects, but he seems quite capable of anything, and I could see him conning or blackmailing powerful acquaintances or enemies for that kind of money.
Anyway, this theory is kind of me shooting from the hip. Its just that Sun claiming her settlement paid for her take over of Paik Heavy Industries really raised some red flags for me!
I’d like to hear what others think…

I think there is more than one person involved. Did you hear before she entered the room that Mr. Paik and his colleagues were saying something about ‘it’ happening through five different banks? Seeing the oceanic six consists of 5 adults… Seems they’re on a mission! +1 :)
Awesome, nice thinking! I think it’s definitely possible that there were a 2nd party involved - Hurley seems like an ideal candidate and someone Sun could trust. I don’t think one of the parties is Mr. Widmore because I think Sun finds finds out that her father’s company has ties with Widmore and plans to exact revenge for Jin’s (possible) death and probably search for answers and truth regarding the conspiracies.

+1 from me - it is logical. However I just don’t see anyone having the motive to give Sun the money. I am sure Hurley would not give the cursed money to a fellow survivor.
And if it were Ben or Widmore - they already have the money - why do they need an automobile manufacturer in Korea for the amount it would have cost them?
As been stated already, b4 Sun enters the room the phone conversation her dad has talked about 5 different bank accounts. I belive this means they all combine their money to take over Pak!
I think it is bigger than just buying the company for profit, or to settle a score. Everything in Lost seems to have significance. Perhaps acquiring the company in some way will help them in their quest to get back to the island. +!
Do we know what exactly the settlement is for? Loss of time? Being presumed dead? Not a better search party for suvivors? Or is it just an out of court settlement from Oceanic Airlines to keep their mouth shut? I’m going with the latter and that would make me think it is more than just $1-$2 million.

I’m not sure how your theories will pan out vegarover, but you are dead on about Sun not being able to afford to buy a company like that with just her settlement money alone!
I agree with Scottythedog, at least 5 of them teamed up to help Sun buy out her father’s company.
I thought of the angle about the 5 accounts being the 5 adult members of the Oceanic 6 as well, and sorry I didn’t bring it up at first. But to me it makes more sense that the money came from separate accounts, that way Mr. Paik couldn’t trace who the actual buyer was…but it wasn’t coming from the 4 other survivors.
Doesn’t mean that you are wrong though scottythedog!
She bought a controlling interest, not the whole company. However, I agree that $2million wouldn’t be enough for even a controlling interest.
According to Wikipedia: Controlling interest in a corporation means to have control of a large enough block of voting stock shares in a company such that no one stock holder or coalition of stock holders can successfully oppose a motion. In theory this normally means that controlling interest would be 50% of the voting shares plus one.
In practice, though, controlling interest can be far less than that, as it is rare that 100% of a company’s voting shareholders actively vote.
In addition, a company that requires a 2/3 super-majority of shares to vote in favor of a motion, can grant, in effect, veto power to a minority shareholder or block of shareholders that own essentially 1/3 of the shares. Thus in some cases, a single entity can essentially maintain control, with only 33.4% of the outstanding shares. Ford Motor Company’s ownership of 33.4% of Mazda is an example of a controlling interest with minority shareholding.
Well, she made a point to say I bought a “controlling interest” in the company. I may be wrong but I believe that could mean as little as 51% of the company stock. So maybe the pooled money was enough to buy HALF of Paik Industries.
At the time they mentioned the 5 different bank things.. I just chalked it up to Sun being sneaky in buying them up. Now that the point is brought up, the number seems like an awefully big coincidence.
She got money from banks. Five of them, actually… Recall the conversation Mr. Palk was having with his two subordinates before she walked in… something like “how did this happen?” Then “they went through five banks…”… I think they were talking about the buy out…
As others have said, Sun didn’t need to buy all or even half the company stock to gain a controlling interest. Also, Don’t forget that she probably got TWO settlements. One for her, one for Jin. And she was probably worth millions before the crash in the first place. It probably would’ve taken everything she had, but I think she could’ve pulled it off on her own.
Very good reasoning. Hurley had his numbers winnings plus the settlement. It also brought to mind that only Hurley went to see Sun.

I like this. +1. I wish I would have had the nts to post a sim theory to this recentley. Also Sun seems to think jin is honestly dead not just lost. She seems to be on a mission for vegeance. Or rescue.
i feel hurley had a good friendship with jin and sun so he probably funded her the money, also i believe hurley is supposed to use that money for a greater purpose since he used the island 4 8 15 16 23 42 to get it. Maybe he should use it to get back to the island like widmore used money to get there + 1
What could be a more appropriate use of cursed money than to invest it in what appears to be somewhat nasty, shady business like Mr Paiks’s. If the money is cursed then investing it in Paik may well cause Paik Industries to fold.
And that is surely what Hurley would want!
Someone very powerful and wealthy has convinced them to lie about what happened. So this wasn’t a regular plane crash settlement, if such a thing exists. Also, this takeover occurs prior to the group deciding to go back, as best I can tell from the flashforwards.
Why is Sun so angry with her dad anyway?
She blames him for ruining Jin’s life.
Who is the other person she blames though because when she confronts her father she says she blames two people for his death… who is the other person?
I was thinking it might be Widmore she’s holding responsible along with her father.
Maybe she blames herself. Or maybe Jack…
+1 for bringing this up! This has really been bugging me, because there doesn’t seem to be enough money to buy the company no matter how you do it. Lets say the settlement was $10M, and all of the O6 chipped in their money - that.s $50M -$60M. Others suggest throwing in Hurleys lottery money - you’re left with $200MM max. The company could only be worth $400MM to get a controlling interest - not close to even a Fortune 2000 company! That couldn’t even buy the building that Paik’s Seoul office sits in.
I was just under the impression that Paik was a pretty powerful dude with one of the larger conglomerates in Korea, but now it looks like a mid-size Korean business.
Its pure fantasy to say that Sun could just go to the bank to borrow much more than that, so the only logical possibility (which vegarover points out) is Widmore.
