Simply put: LOST is a show that has many different stories, that all intertwine to make one big picture (a very big picture of something we recognize. or a story we recognize rather…)

I think LOST will be that show that starts redefining television, giving it a new edge. Therefore the main plot [because I believe there are many sub plots going on] or “the bigger picture” will be based on something viewers would already know something about. [Something historical/Religious/Paranormal[Bermuda Triangle], etc) And within that plot, there are sub plots taking place to spice things up and help give a twist on a “classic” tale. (whatever it may be).
I think everyones theories are becoming so complicated, that they don’t realize how simple the main mystery of the show is…
The show is ultimately about our connections with each other. It’s that simple, it’s a show about connections. Everyone in the show has their own story, their OWN background. However, in many of the their own stories (the flashbacks), other characters are seen in the background, or play a minor role in their life. And as they all go about living their lives and crossing each others paths, their paths (or their fates) clash together on FLIGHT 815, which eventually crashes on an island.
And from there, it turns into a story about how each individuals lives are brought together and mesh together to create that “bigger picture” that is going on.
And the flash forwards are merely showing us how when they get off the island their lives are more intertwined (instead of a character being in the background, there front and center with the other character.), but people are missing (the people on the island), so their paths undergo change.
Simply put: LOST is a show that has many different stories, that all intertwine to make one big picture (a very big picture of something we recognize. or a story we recognize rather…)
I’m sorry if I’m too simple, but I really don’t think a network would pick up a show if they weren’t able to have a simple understanding of it as a whole.
Hey it sounds more like a description for a daytime soapie than Lost. But hey you can view it on whatver level suits you.

You mean like Twin Peaks?
you are mixing up different things: theme(s) and plot(s). All those “complicated” theories are interested in the plot (and its subtleties), whereas you are talking about grand themes (love/friendship/”connections”). And those tend to be more basic, or “simple” if you like. +1 for your observation & -1 for thinking it would override the plot-theories.
