Ben and Widmore know exactly what their fate is and when or what is supposed to happen before they die.

In 4.9, The Shape of Things to Come, Widmore asks Ben if he has come to kill him and Ben replies “we both know I can’t do that.” It seems the reason is not any kind of artificial “rules of the game,” but the same reason Michael can’t die—the Grandfather Paradox.
The gun jammed on Keamy when he tried to shoot Michael in Episdoe 11, Cabin Fever, because he can’t die until he fulfills his fate. This would suggest that Ben and Widmore know exactly what their fate is and when or what is supposed to happen before they die. Not sure if this is an obvious point.
