When that guy told young John to choose the items that belonged to Him, it was a test to see what kind of person he would be.
Here is what they ment:
- The sand ment that he was part of the Island and the Island was apart of him (corny, i know)
- The compass ment he knows what path to follow.
- When young John chose the Knife, it ment that he would turn into a killer, or Kill someone who was ment to live. That upset the man, b.c he wanted him to pick another object, maybe the A comic book, Mystery Tales, to prove that he has a soft side. Or he wanted him to pick the Book of Laws, so he would prove he knows the rules of “the game”

Me like!
The “special school”, or whatever it is has to be just a cover story. IMO, Richard wasn’t taking John with him regardless of the items he chose.
What is interesting is the strong reaction. I’m not so sure it had directly to do with the knife, but rather that John picked exactly the items that prove him out.
It just created a strong sense of urgency in Richard for whatever it is he (Richard) needs to do next.
