First time poster here, so forgive me if I’m rehashing stuff that others have already mentioned.

Personally, I think the teams are being worked by Richard Alpert and Charles Widmore, and those teams represent “Fate” (Richard’s) and “Free WIll” (Widmore’s)

Although there’s no “date” for Ben’s birth year, we know it was on Dec 19th sometime in the early ‘60s (based on the vehicles in the shot during Ben’s birth). John Locke’s birsthday was in 1956, which means Alpert was already working on recruiting Locke well before Ben made it to the island. Both Ben and Locke were born premature, both had mothers named “Emily” and both barely knew them. I think that Alpert felt John was “not ready for his school” yet when John chose the knife over “The Book of Laws” as the book represents fate/faith (being the holy book of the Bahá’í Faith) and the knife represents free will. John also seems to have little patience, always striving and fighting to do what others tell him he can’t. This goes against what Alpert told young Ben in the forest about being able to join the Hostiles “maybe….but it will take a great deal of patience”. Abbadon/Widmore’s/Free Will team however manages to push a button with John, and even though the walkabout being a way to “find out who you really are” may smack of fate, it’s the fact that he’s almost daring John to buckle and go against his “don’t tell me what I can’t do” creed.

I think Widmore is partially behind the pregnant women dying on the island as well. The birth control tests used by Kate, Sun and Claire were from Widmore Labs. We also know that Thomas Mittelwerk was working on possibly attempting to change a Valenzetti Equation value in some sort of mass plague release he had been testing on people in Sri Lanka…and has/had considered Paik Heavy Industries and The Widmore Corporation associates. To what end? Attrition. If people on the island can’t reproduce, then eventually they will die off and their resources available for Widmore’s taking. The only other option they would have would be to bring more people onto the island which would make their secrecy less sure and very existance that much more likely to be discovered…both of which would play into Widmore’s hands.

Ben was recruited eventually because not only did he prove he had patience (in dealing with his fahter for so long and not struggling at the bonds that life had given him at every turn), but because he was cut from similar cloth (so to speak) from John (IE : Having similar life themes). However as Ben has recently said, he understands this was his destiny, and his time is now done. The island needed someone with patience…patience to live a life secluded away from the rest of the world and be able to convice/connive others to that end. Patience to wait untill a precise moment or time to make a major move (the Purge)…but now, with Widmore and the frieghter so close, the Island realizes the time for waiting may be over and the time for patience is past. Now it is time for a fighter. Someone who will not go quietly or be told they have to leave or stand down. Someone who will defy the will of others to fulfill the destiny he believes is his. Someone like John Locke…and in so doing, I think Widmore will find out that that was the turning point in what will be his failure…when “free will John Locke” found faith and a “destiny” to follow.

You’re reasoning may be right that Ben’s time is over, in fact i agree, but i definitely do not thinking that Ben is not a fighter, he has fought a lot for the island from what we know of the past and the future.

Iam : I agree Ben is a fighter, but Ben is a different kind of fighter than Locke. Ben is more of a “oversee and have someone do it for you” kind of person in my opinion. he may have set up and organized the Purge, but there’s no proof that he was the one who released naything other than the canister in the van with his dad. Locke however (I feel) would have been “no, if anyone’s going to do it…I will” about it, and I think the Island feels it’s that kind of a person it needs now.
