“So therefore the smoke monster could not have been made by the DHARMA”

After watching the latest episode of lost Cabin Fever no theories originally sprang to mind. But after reading through a few here I just made a sudden connection. Its not much and might be wrong … But I think you’ll be interested.
Remember the third flashback of Lockes episode, he was about five. He’s very quiet and shy. Richard Alpert comes to see him and places Six items on the table and asks which belong to him. But thats not what I want to focus on. When he sees a picture of the monster he is clearly surprised and recognises the monster.
So this means that the monster existed when Locke was Five that was in about 1960. The DHARMA was founded sometime in the 70’s ?correct? And they may not have found the island until years later. So therefore the smoke monster could not have been made by the DHARMA and it was around before them.
(Unless this some gross continuaty error.)

No, as stated by the user segwaypirate with his theory of the Novikov self-consistency principle, the smoke is just a correction system. Another thing you must remember there were people already living on the island befor the DHARMA project. This people include Richard Alpert. Now about the selection of items is that it is made on things which are his! Intresting to see the items he does not pick! like the book of rules.
There is a clear relation between the images from exodus and the drawing well spotted. Still a little blurry for a +1,
locke might have just known that he would meet with the monster in the future maybe jacob gave him a dream ….
abbc514 im trying to say that Richard recognises it because he was part of the hostiles but this was in 1960 and so the DHARMA werent around and couldnt have created it. I’m not trying to say its uses or anything.
I’m with ya stickman. great theory.
I would be inclined to believe that the drawing was an example of Locke attuning himself to the Island from such a young age and being aware of things - future things - that he couldn’t have known of.
For example, he had that dream of Boone bloodied during Deus Ex Machina, then they went to the drug plane and, lo and behold, Boone ended up looking all bloodied as Locke had ‘foreseen’.
Ben remarks, during this episode, about how he used to have dreams, which I thought was a very pointed remark. (Possibly he could have indicating that he doesn’t dream anymore, or he only has nightmares, or his dreams are not the message-dreams that Locke received - like the Horace Goodspeed dream.)
Dues Ex Machina is also the episode of a halo 3 machinima. Anyways, Lock as AC stated could have seen the future. Dharma found the island a long time ago by the way, or so Lost lore goes. -1.
X - According to the various films, the initiative was founded in 1970 by Gerald and Karen DeGroot, two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan. So what I’m trying to say (maybe I didnt put it well enough) is that it would be impossible for the DHARMA to have created the monster.
As we all know, the island is in some kind of temporal distortion, so even if at the time Locke was 5 the DI hadn’t discovered the island yet, they might have been on the island already (the DI from the future or something like that). Remember that the Losties on the beach discovered the doctor’s body several hours before he was actually killed, so it might be possible.
We probably should be careful assuming that what we saw in Thursday’s episode was a flashback. Aside from the episode that followed the freighter crew, every episode has followed the logic of a flash forward (not backward). Think about it in terms of the dhali lama, which is the obvious allusion in the scene with the knife (and as the producers have said Richard follows the archetype of finder of the dhali). The lives of these characters could be on a sort of loop, in which the characters continually re-live their lives in an attempt to “self-correct” and embrace who they are. In other words, we don’t know what will happen to Locke when he attempts to move the island. Just a thought.
the picture locke drew is very similar to the first time lock saw the BLACK smoke. remember he fell over looking kind of scared
