richard: You like backgammon? Yeah? You seem to have a pretty good sense of the game. I’m Richard, John. I run a school for kids who are… extremely special, and I have reason to believe that you might be one them. Mind if I show you a couple of really neat things?

Lost is looking more and more like a power struggle for control of the island. That power struggle seems to be between Ben & Widmore and played almost as a game. The paradigm of this ‘game’ we do not as yet know.

After watching the latest episode it seems to me that Richard (Bens Team) has been ‘courting’ Locke from a very early age but it was actually Abaddon (Widmore’s Team) who finally maneuvered Locke onto the island by setting him off on the trip that would lead to him being on 815.

Now I don’t think that the plane was filled and deliberately brought down by anybody. Instead I think that both side knew that the plane would crash, How? I don’t know, They saw the future? Its not important right now.

So both sides know that the plane will crash and they go about trying to get certain people on the plane. I’d always dismissed this idea before because putting people on a plane that is going to crash is crazy. How could you be certain that they would survive. Well now we know that certain people can not be killed (at least until there purpose on the island is fulfilled)

Lets examine Locke against this point. He survived an extremely premature birth (unusual), he then fought off a number of server childhood diseases (even more unusual especially for a ‘weak’ premature baby). He survived a miracle fall from an 8 floor window. It seems to me that the island has been keeping John alive form the very moment he was born. Side note could Emily being run over have been an attempt to kill John before he was born and under the islands protection?

Ok so both sides know the plane will crash and both sides know that certain people are ‘special’ and under the islands ‘protection’ so will survive the crash. Now back to the game, all of these special people are like ‘pieces’ in this game and both sides have selected the pieces they believe they need to win this struggle for the island.

Please let me know what you think!

What are both sides though… Dharma and othersville? Others and Whidmoor? Dharma and Whidmoor? Otherwise great theory, +1.

Thanks X. The sides currently seem to be Widmore v Ben. Which by extension would probably mean Widmore v Jacob? I just don’t like to use Jacob because at this stage we know so little about him.

Yeah good theory I could list the reasons but im in a rush so just +1.

Good thoughts…so if this is true, would that mean that both Widmore and Ben put people on the plane? And if so, who is on who’s side? Could some of the losties actually be Widmore’s people?

maybe is is all a game and the pieces are the characters. Would make some sense. LIke how come the survivours have such a wide variety of skills and talents?

May explain why they kidnap the children. Remember the Others’ brain wash room? Maybe the use this on the kids to make them on their side. With same the same beliefs, giving them motivation to to their bidding (Maybe even “willing to sacrifice their lives for this island”?).

fuessler yeah some of the losties could be Widmore’s pieces without knowing it. If this is correct then working out who has placed which piece on the island and why will be the fun. This theory could also extend to the freighter, they both knew that the freighter was coming to the island and placed their pieces accordingly (Michael) though I don’t necessarily want to go there yet.

I have always dismissed the notion that the passengers were “selected” to be on the plane. But given what we have seen in “Meet Kevin Johnson” and “Cabin Fever”, I am opening up to the possibility. Great job! +1

I like how you are thinking. Two small additions/comments. I think it is easist to reffer to the two sides to this battle as Richard v. Abadon. Remember that Richard is chronologicaly one of the earliest characters that we meet. In regards to your question about “if they put people on the plane how would they know who would survive the crash?” I think this question neglects the time travel aspect of the show. I think a better question is why wouldn’t they know who would survive.

potus not sure what you are saying. I said that i had previously thought that it was to risky to put people on the plane, but now we know that the island won’t let people die then there is no risk.

    LookDJZZ,

The rivalry between Ben and Widmore is undeniable.

Alpert and Abaddon, in my opinion, are wild-cards. We don’t exactly where their allegiances lie. As I suggested in a separate theory; although Abaddon’s team is on the boat, I don’t think he (Abaddon) necessarily works for Widmore.

    Great post. +1

The “game” is between Jacob and Widmore. Jacob has been trapped by Widmore and has been using Ben to lead his team to set him free. Jacob needs Locke to lead “Phase 2” which he can only do when Locke is ready, hence Alpert’s frustration.

Locke’s accident was arranged, by Cooper (who is not Locke’s father, we only have Cooper’s word about the kidney transplant) to delay his progress (stop him going on the walkabout) but Abbaddon wants him on the island anyway ( to do the sweat hut thing instead) and wants him on flight 815 anyway, even tho he’s not ready, a strategy that Alpert disagree’s with. +1
