“Shit, he knows!”
— IslandBound
The reason Richard was so angry.
He lays objects on the table. A baseball glove and comic book. Typical boy things. If John picks one of these, he doesn’t know his fate yet, or he doesn’t remember his future,.,.,.
Then, a compass and vile of sand. If John picks one of these , there is a good chance he knows something.
But the knife. He picked the knife. Richard is upset because a subconscious part of John, is telling him to kill Richard. To faint for him to understand or realize what it means. Just a gut instinct to pick it up.
This troubles Alpert quite a bit. He’s probably thinking “shit, he knows! I can’t kill him (presuming Locke can’t die untill his fate is meet) What am I gonna do, I tried to run his mom over, he survived! Damn . What am I gonna do.”
Later we see John crippled by his con artist “father”. Did Alpert set this up to guarentee lock would never get to the Island. We have seen “Locke’s dad” on island. Perhaps he’s been there in thew past too.
But still, Locke, somehow gets to the island anyway.
I think in the final episodes of season 6 we will learn that Alpert is very bad, and has been “acting” nice the whole time.
Locke’s instinct to pick up the knife WAS because he is supposed to kill Richard and prevent every thing from happening.
And as far as the book goes….
Irocz28 just posted a gem http://lost-theories.com/theories/2008/may/10/where-weve-seen-book-laws/
This is good, but why would Locke want to kill Richard? In the few times Richard and Locke spoke on the island, I didn’t sense any hostility. It actually seemed like Richard was helping him when he told Locke how he could kill his father through Sawyer.
I think the right answer was to pick up the baseball glove. Richard was trying to recruit John to play in the Island Series Softball Tournament between the Dharma Initiative “HIppies” and the Island Natives “Hostiles”.
Brilliant dude, just brilliant. +1 from me.
HaHa. Hold up IslandBound, that wasn’t my post.
But I did give you a +1 on this one.
What makes you think Richard thinks John is thinking about killing him…just because he picked up the knife? I saw nothing in the scene to hint at that, and I’ve seen nothing in the series to hint at it either….
What makes you so certain “we all know” John’s con-artist “father” has been on the island before? Of course, he was there when he was held in the brig…but that was decades AFTER the scene when John was a little boy….
None of this sounds like a theory to me….just random guessing and making stuff up…. Sorry….
I edited..
Something in the back of johns mind is saying PICK up the knife, like dejavu kinda. He doesn’t understand though. But Richard does.
Also. He has been “acting nice” His intentions are bad.
If we are to assume you cant die until the island is done with you, then it’s safe to say john was immortal as a child and didn’t even know it.
Oops! srry. Credit to Shasty. really good post
IslandBound,
I hope you don’t mind if I go off-topic a bit, but I don’t want to start a whole new thread for this idea. Just a throw-out about young John Locke:
Remember in Flashes Before Eyes when 1994/6 (?) Desmond was sending his conscience to the future, Christmas Eve 2004 Desmond? (Verified by Darlton in podcast.) Well what if Richard was having young Locke send his conscience to future Island Locke — just to see if he could do it? Young Locke was seeing the implements he had in the future on the Island.
This sort of exercise may be what they were doing with Walt — that is sending him to future Walt.
I know people balk at time travel, but the writers have said that consciences move about in time.
Perhaps young Locke saw glimpses of the future and didn’t understand them, but they gave him a sense of promise. So when he seemingly was not amounting to anything special, he lived with a sense of un-fulfillment. He definitely projects unaccomplished achievement in his flashbacks.
I like this — I think it works. What do you think?
And thanks for the post! :)

Good points thanks. p.s. You write well.
I think that Richard got angry when young Locke reached for the knife because, as his teacher would later try to point out, it meant Locke was pushing himself to be someone he wasn’t supposed to be.
Locke had grand ambitions to be a ‘hunter’ (remember how he claimed as much to the undercover cop during Further Instructions) and it was this ambition that very much held Locke back from being the person he was supposed to be to assume the role of Island Chief.
I believe that Richard wanted Locke to pick the book of laws because Locke’s destiny was to go to the island and protect it or something of that nature. Young Locke chose the knife because as we have seen, he does not know his destiny or refuses to set forth down that road. The reason why Ben was the “chosen one” on the island for so long was because Richard asked him to kill all those DI members in order to be free of that life. Ben knew it was the only way to leave that life behind and somewhat his destiny to do so. Therefore I don’t think Richard or Ben are the “bad guys” in this situation, I think they are just doing what the island needed them to do or what was chosen for them. I’m leaning towards Locke being somewhat evil, only because he chose the knife knowing that was not his destiny, you see the hesitance Young Locke as between choosing the book or the knife. And I find it funny that Locke always tells Ben he “is nothing like him.” Although there are the similarities between their persona lives. Or that he refers to Ben as a killer. I think Ben only does what the island needs him to whereas Locke gets in over his head and people end up dying.
Sorry… Its a rant, I just have a lot of thoughts that can never get written in an organized manner, therefor I will never actually write a theory. :P Plus this is my first comment, because I found the objects very interesting as well.
Overall, I like. :]
AC,
I’m not sure that Island Chiefing is for farmers. It seems like it was his determination and restored faith in himself that got him to the Island.
OBiscuits,
If you’re looking for someone who will gas unsuspecting men, women and children, you might want someone who isn’t afraid of a knife. Alpert is hardly adverse to violence. Just ask Juliet’s ex-husband. Alpert’s reaction is still a bit of a mystery to me. The ideas seem like a force-fit so far. It’s the only way to get to the answer though… glad you’re joining in the comments! and I like your name :)
thank you. :]
all i can say is that i’m really interested in richard being more involved. Although you only see him a few times, i think he’s an awesome character.
I posted my own theory as to what the knife means…

I dunno about the conscious-time-travel either. Desmond didn’t seem to be able to control when he flashed to, and if you didn’t coincidentally end up in the time when you owned all of those objects (if they even were at the same time), you wouldn’t know you owned them. It seems more like a test of destiny or spirit… what was Charlotte testing Daniel about?
AC, why would Locke be pushing himself to be a hunter when he’s like, three? I think it would have to be after his motivation from Abaddon.
Wow. If Alpert is afraid of Locke then what side is Alpert on? I didn’t ever think about it being a test to see what side Locke was on. I thought it was about his skills.I also like appleomyeyes idea about Locke as a kid traveling to the future to find out what belongs to him. Plus 1 for the new idea.
