I noted this in another post.

It seems like there might be two opposing Island forces at play.

Why would the Island give Ben cancer and at the same time bring down a spinal surgeon from the sky? Was the Island trying to get rid of Ben or not? Who/what gave him cancer and who/what crashed a spinal surgeon?

(If the Island didn’t crash Jack, then it could have taken out Jack a la Smokey.)

Yes, the question is: Was Ben meant to die or not?

I think not, maybe the 2 forces are 1. The Island 2. Jacob?

Also, can anyone answer this for me, Ben said: “This Island is dealing with strong forces it never had to deal before” or something. What did he mean by that? Keamy isn’t a THAT stong force, what is he going to do that’s going to put The Island in danger? Maybe he meant Widmore? Or he meant nothing, and just wanted to scare Locke? Plz let me know…

I think the freighter guys are unusually dangerous because they’ve found the Island (thanks to the purple flash of energy) and figured out how to breach the Island’s barrier (don’t know how they figured this out — Faraday I guess). Probably doesn’t happen that often.

I have no idea if Ben was meant to die and why he would no longer be meant to die… We can at least conclude that the Island is powerful, but not “all-powerful.”

    +1

    don’t mind if I do :)

    did you get my e’mail?

Maybe the forces are 1. the island and 2. fate?

I had always thought of them as the same, but maybe Ben was pissing off the island (so to speak) but still had work to do in the future, so fate wouldn’t let him die, much like Michael jamming all those guns.

    It’s not really a theory, more a set of questions, but they’re quite thought-provoking so +1 :)
