Richard Alpert tested Locke much the same way Buddhists Priests test for the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama(not sure yet if they do the same for the Panchen Lama..) (apparently he wasn’t pleased with the result, and as a sidenote I think it’s because Locke actually passed the test, but that the ‘ownership’ of the knife indicated he was the incarnation of someone… not desirable to the Others direction.)
Anyways, Widmore claimed that the island was ‘his’ and that he would take it back one day. In light of the inclusion of reincarnation in the Lost Mythology, I pose that perhaps Widmore is the n’th incarnation of someone who previously was in ‘possession’ of the Island.
Perhaps he was once the ‘guardian’ of the Island, as Ben seems to have been and Locke now seems to become.

I wrote basically the same thing as you a few below your posting. I think we’re on to something— read mine and maybe we can extrapolate our common theme further, since no one else seems particularly keen on them at the moment. :)
Although I don’t think it is Whidmore. I think Whidmore is trying to destroy the latest incarnation of whoever the “Lama” figure is. The others are searching for him (Alpert, the hospital orderly, etc) and Whidmore, who wants the island back, is trying to defeat this movement.
Though the ‘Lama’ concept is interesting, it’s certainly understood in the Buddhist faith it’s not only the Lama that reincarnate. Seeing as fate - or perhaps the Island - is a ‘fickle bitch’, it might have picked a previous incarnation of Widmore. Also, who’s to say he wasn’t a good guy back then?
Anyways, if one reincarnates, everyone does. Just happens to be that they’re particularly keen on checking for the Dalai and Panchen Lama.
