Did Sawyer simply bring her spirit back with him so that Claire could visit her child and say her final goodbyes?

St. Claire of Assisi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClareofAssisi

I found it interesting that connections to the life and body of work relevant to the storyline of ‘Lost’. St Claire was renowned for her likeness to the Holy Mother, Mary. In the dream-state of Charlie we see the nativity scene where Claire is shown as Mary and Aaron is shown as the newborn Christ child. We see the abandoned Aaron seemingly like the nativity scene again in ‘Something Nice Back Home’, 4:09. We have been told by the psychic that the child mustn’t be raised by another. Yet Claire is lured away by the apparition of her own father Christian. Why would Claire willing abandon her infant child? Was she in a dream state? Or possibly has she died and left Aaron in the care of Sawyer? We clearly see Christian Sheppard, her father, was he sent to Claire to assist her to ‘move on’? This would stand to reason, if Claire had in fact been killed in the explosion of her house in the Barracks scene. Did Sawyer simply bring her spirit back with him so that Claire could visit her child and say her final goodbyes? It seems likely. This would certainly explain the ensuing dialogue between Miles and Sawyer, as well as the way that Miles was curiously watching Claire when with Aaron and when she departed without Miles objecting. He seemingly knew that she was already dead and therefore her departure was a natural and correct sequence of events. Why would he need to alert Sawyer and why wouldn’t he find it odd, which he definitely did not!

Obando Fertility Rites http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ObandoFertilityRites

I also found this an interesting connection that the Pilipino people pray to St. Claire among other Saints for assistance in fertility matters. Claire being the one person that we have seen successfully give birth on the island, and I know that Danielle also gave birth to Alex on island, but still found it interesting.

One last connection to St. Claire is that she was given the title of patron saint of Television.

Interesting idea…she is already dead! Miles made another comment before the explosion regarding Claire…can’t remember now, but made it sound like she was not going to be around much longer. She did seem remarkably unharmed by that giant explosion…thanks for the theory.

Interesting. You know I hadn’t thought about it, but we do know that the images of dead people can be seen by more than just one person. I suppose it’s very possible that somebody has been walking around for sometime dead and either not knowing it, or knowing it and everybody else doesn’t know it. Jack for instance. I’m not saying he is, but there’s the whole mystery of him waking up in the woods and those few moments where he’s dissappeared. Claire certainly seemed to have died, and Sawyer even wondered how she could have not had a scratch or even lived. Perhaps some others have died as well. Who knows.

chrislee: That is exactly what I am insinuating. We have seen the dead walking around the island already. Christian, Eko’s brother Yemi, Dave - Hurleys old buddy for the institute, so why would it be out of the question to think that what we saw was Claire in the supernatural form? I think that most of us fans dont want to see your heros die/ or be dead man walking, but it this show has taught us one thing it’s to “expect the unexpected”

good ideas tharde, creepy also +1

I think not. ‘Dead Claire’ was breast-feeding Aaron.

Whichever way you slice it, not only does that seem ridiculous it’s also rather disgusting.

  8. tharde5 May 8, 2008 3:06 p.m. Comment: 8

AC: I would beg to differ. We see Claire in the midst of her maternal instinct, feeding Aaron. As I stated before, which you obviously missed, she could have been ‘letting go’. I guess that we will see in the upcoming episodes. Still the fact of the matter is she has abandoned her son and that just isnt like Claire. The other possiblilty I see is that she was coerced away from her son. Which is also a distinct possibliity. But to render a judgment on an idea as ‘ridicilous’ is strong words. Why always so negitive? You know theories are to create a new lines of thinking. Simply regurgitating facts doesnt make for good theories.

Tharde5 Great theory. I agree that there has been much oddness around the circumstances of the explosion and Claire’s behavior thereafter. Good thoughts. I also agree with the coercion element being another possibility. BTW just “ridiculous” ignore comments.

  10. AngeloComet May 8, 2008 3:42 p.m. Comment: 10

I’m not always negative! And I did prefix my comment with “I think not” deliberately, to position everything that followed as explicitly my own personal viewpoint. If it turns out wrong, so be it. I’ve been wrong before. It’s pretty easy to accept.

My own personal viewpoint is that the Lost creators asking us Lost viewers to believe a spirit of a woman breast-feeding her flesh and blood child is pushing the boundaries of decency and credulity.

I did discuss the notion that Claire was dead and spirit Claire was with Miles and Sawyer in my analysis of the episode (there is a lot of evidence that points to it), but ultimately I reached the conclusion that you also posit - that she was coerced, willingly or unwillingly.

Thank you kindly lockeko. You know the previews of this weeks episode (tonight) we see Horace, and we iknow he is dead, yet he is interacting with the ‘living’ made me think that possibly Claire is in this state. I guess the proof will be in the pudding, but her abandonment is beyond odd its just not right! Thanks for the kind words.

no problem Tharde. Any word on when the documentary starring yourself and prof will air. I can’t wait to see you guys discussing Lost. There aren’t any two people who have ever been on this site who would have been better to pick than you two guys. Keep up the good work.

ultimately, I really hope they don’t kill Claire off, but it they will have to do something drastic for the viewers to believe she would allow Aaron to leave with Kate.

Great post tharde, I have to agree that there are a lot of clues to imply that Claire is dead, but I’m hoping it’s the writers throwing another red herring at us. I can’t imagine how Claire could possibly abandon Aaron though :’(

Thardie, Very nice theory! I love the comparisons with St. Claire. I, too hope Claire is not dead.

There is a chance Christian was taking Claire to the “Temple”, or to see Jacob, so I will hold out some hope on that one for now!

    Great thoughts! +1

A Kajillion ++++for giving it to the negative megalomaniac. He really does have a major bug up his arse over people who threaten him, by daring to write creative theories. Especially, if they happen to be people from “the old guard”.

Take my advice and insult his intelligence. It only takes a few words. LOL

Nice connections, thardie… (and good to “see” you, btw!)

On Claire, I’m with dab… I think Christian took her to Jacob. If Claire didn’t die in the explosion then I don’t think she’ll die at all. But there’s all kinds of twisted possibilities that I’m excited to see play out. Lost has surprised me before so we’ll see what happens. Interesting idea, I certainly never thought about that. +1

lockeko: No word as of yet but Prof and I were told that most likely this summer suring the hiatus. The last part of the interview was about how we see the rest of the show playing out and many of my speculations have proved accurate. I’m excited and nervous but hopefully it will turn out positive.

tharde, I love the connection you made to St. Claire. I, too, found the whole episode a little off. The explosion should have killed Claire, Miles was looking at her very strangely and I could never accept her just walking off with her father into the jungle and leaving Aaron alone. I don’t like, but I agree that Claire is dead and was being given the opportunity to say goodbye to Aaron.

Great to see you back and of course, +1 :)

  19. Irocz28 May 8, 2008 7:05 p.m. Comment: 19

I agree with AC as well. If we can believe that 70+ people survived a mid-air plane explosion, why are we having such a hard time believing Claire survived a tiny house explosion?

While us “die-hards” pick up on these suttle clues that Claire is dead, we still have to think of the other 99% of Lost fans who are casual viewers. If Claire turns out to be dead already, all those fans are going to be scratching their heads saying “Huh? Wasn’t she just breast feeding Aaron in the last episode?” It will get confusing.

  20. KyleMii May 8, 2008 7:34 p.m. Comment: 20

i think they will probably explain that soon.

also remember that miles was brought on to the island because of his special connection with dead people.

one thing that bothers me is that not everyone appears to take a physical form after dying. also christian died off of the island. so how does that work?

i agree 100% with this theory. there is so many clues that made it so obvious during that episode and the one before it. they even had sawyer claire and miles walk by danielle and alex’s boyfriends half buried dead bodies to remind us of miles abiliity.

Anyways i think that we will probably see claire in another episode or either Miles or Horace will explain that she is dead.

  21. wtfsignmeup May 8, 2008 8:27 p.m. Comment: 21

Another possibility is that Miles could see Christian before we did. Perhaps he was close to Claire the whole time and thats what Miles was watching?

  22. Katrinicity May 9, 2008 9:28 a.m. Comment: 22

I like that wtf, I was thinking along the same lines.

tharde, I kept your theory in mind when watching and it seems you could be on to something here. The bit with Claire was odd and it did leave me wondering if she was really alive or dead. I’d +1 you again if I could.

(and psst, I’d like to see what JIMG thinks…) ; )

  23. dabiatchishere May 9, 2008 9:50 a.m. Comment: 23

Looks like you called this one right, Tharde! Kudos! It now appears to me, that Claire walks among ‘the dead’.

  24. tharde5 May 9, 2008 11:09 a.m. Comment: 24

dabs&kat: After watching last nights ep and seeing Claire in the cabin with Christian, I truly beleive now that Claire is amongst the dead. I find it most interesting that she seemed pleased to be there, and when she said ‘Im fine’ it seemed to be like a message that all deceased would love to have to opportunity to pass on to their loved ones.
