The Smoke Monster reminds me alot of the Prey monster in the Michael Crichton Novel Prey. It was a swarm of nanobytes that could cause physical damage, had limited time to use its power and could look like anyone. The creature in Prey also makes a weird noise that sounds like talking(whispers)
It seems that the Smoke Monster shares the same attributes.

Good post, and you have some relevant correlations here… but the problem is that the writers have confirmed that Smokey is not made of nanobytes.
the same people that said the show would have nothing to do with time travel? I thought this same thing when I read prey, i hope we are right +1
really? whispers? such pilferers! +1
Prey was Crichton’s worse novel.
Yeah. There are also these theoretical nanomachines called foglets that would be able to transform into anything right in front of your eyes ‘so as to blur the distinction between “real” and “virtual” reality’. Check it out under The Universe Wakes up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_SingularityIsNear
All of Crichton’s novels are his worst novel. But I like him anyway for bringing thought into the mainstream.
Rimland, being something of a Crichton fanatic I can tell you Prey is nowhere near his worst. Though it did have a dumb ending.
The Lost World was a clunker. And that latest one - Next… Woo! Crichton can’t do satire! Stick to technology-going-wrong, man!
I’m a Crichton fan and read Prey, and I thought the smoke monster was nano-technology as well.
But then people on this board said “no, the writers have said it isn’t nano-technology.” So I felt pretty disappointed.
However, I’ve searched the internet high and wide and I have never come across any article or transcript of an interview with anybody associated from Lost ever being quoted as saying Smokey isn’t made up of nanabots.
The only places I have read it are here, some college kid’s blog, and Lostpedia, but none of these sources have any credible references.
So, I guess what I’m saying is…until I see one of the Lost writers look straight into a camera and say “Smokey isn’t nano-technology” or its proven to be something else on the show itself… I still think it is made up of nanobots.
During my time on LT several people have suggested nano-technology as the explanation for Smokey. While I’m not fimly in the nanobot camp, I really applaud Vegarover for searching the internet. I agree that everytime nanotechnology is mentioned someone pipes in saying that it has been debunked by the producers. If it has, let’s see a link. I don’t think this theory can be debunked until Darlton definitively states that there is not nanotechnology I don’t think it’s been debunked.
http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/DJDanJune14transcript closest thing to nano-tech in Lost i could find.
I can find dozens of posts of people saying the nano-bots have been debunked by the producers, but now interview where DL and CC actually said that.
At comic-con July 31 2006 the following was said:
Fan 18: Alright. This is a yes or no question?
Carlton Cuse: No.
Damon Lindelof: Yes. [Crowd laughs]
Fan 18: Is the Monster a cloud of nanobots?
Carlton Cuse: [Laughing] Is this the same guy from last year?
Damon Lindelof: Did you ask that question last year?
Fan 18: No, that wasn’t me.
Damon Lindelof: Man, if I had a nickel for every time I got asked the nanobot question. Uh… NO. It is not a cloud of nanobots. Sorry.
Carlton Cuse: But, at least we were honest.
Damon Lindelof: See you next year. [Laughs] You look so disappointed. He waited on line forty minutes for that.
Think that debunks it.
Here is a link to the ‘Official Transcript’ but i’m sure you could search and find the actual podcast.
