Probably more of a gut feeling than a theory! But since Ben has stated that he is going to kill Penny, and Charles Widmore claimed that Ben would never find her, I began to wonder if Ben is using Desmond to try and lure Penny to the Island. I know that the timeline isn’t right, but as we are so frequently told - time is relative.
I keep thinking about the fact that Ben planted the seed in Locke’s mind that entering the numbers was pointless. This eventually led to Des turning the failsafe key, and Penny’s people detecting the electromagnetic anomaly.
What if the reason Charles Widmore is so anti-Des, is because he knows Ben is going to try and use him to lure his daughter to the Island. Then it becomes a big power struggle between Charles & Ben. Perhaps Charles thinks he’s seen the last of Des, but doesn’t realise that Ben has the upper hand??
Perhaps I should stop obsessing about what the next Lost twist will be and do some work??

I’ve been struggling with this as well. It doesn’t make sense that Ben didn’t know Desmond was on the island. And (it appears) using the failsafe was what allowed everyone to be rescued… which Ben ostensibly didn’t want. So, why did he convince Locke to do so? And what about the food drops? Is Ben making them, or Dharma, or someone else?
Very odd indeed.
Of course they knew everything what was happening in Swan from the observation station.
I like it :)
Of course Ben knew Des was on the island, there were security cameras in all the Dharma stations, remember when the losites found the tv room and say a flask of Mikhail on the screen? It would make sense that they knew Des was down there,
As I understand it, the Swan Station was unknown to Ben and The Others. (I’m sure they had some idea of it, but didn’t know where it was.) I have to sanction this idea because Darlton said it was so. That’s a heck of a fact for them to state and then do a u-turn on.
The Pearl could see Mikhail in The Flame, but I am not sure if it worked the other way around.
(I admit, it is hard to imagine how The Others didn’t bother with The Swan or The Pearl but apparently that’s how it was! I guess we have to believe that the same way we believe Danielle never saw another person in 16 years and The Others never noticed Desmond’s yacht moored at the cove for three years!)
IT IS TRUE, TIME IS relative. i LIKE THIS THEORY, IT WOULD TIE STUFF UP WITH SEASON 2.
I wonder how anti-Des, Widmore really is. True he withheld from Penny all the letters that Des wrote while in prison … BUT … he told Desmond that he did this and he returned the letters to Desmond. Surely Widmore would have been better off not telling Des this and letting him think that Penny was just not interested in writing to him.
Also why did Widmore give Des Penny’s address? This also suggests that Widmore is not so anti-Des as may be suggested. I think that the person who is most anti-Des is Des himself.
Des has had many opportunities to patch things up with Penny, after being released from prison he could have taken all the letters that he had written and given them to Penny. Telling Penny about the welcome that Widmore gave him when he was released.
At the stadium when Penny turned up, he could have gone with her then, but no, so I think that Des makes poor decisions for himself. He really is his own worst enemy.
Seedy, I had not thought of that particular aspect of Ben using Desmond to locate Penny, but it is definitely a good one.
We do know Ben has ‘intel’ on everyone, so he does know about Penny’s quest to find “the island”. Even if he is unaware of Desmond’s abilities at this point, Ben will find out. When he does, Desmond will be manipulated, into guiding Penny to “the island”.
Nice theory! +1
Exactly Stitch! Desmond thinks he’s a victim of fate but it’s actually his inability to believe in himself that kept him from being with Penny-Widmore even said so himself (“I’m quite sure she would have said yes,” I believe Widmore said.) Desmond could have proposed to Penny, and everyone on the plane could have decided not to get on it. I think Desmond is going to be the biggest example whenever the storyline turns to…”Of course you have free will, Desmond, Jack, Kate, etc. It may seem that you’ve all been manipulated and what not, but you make your own choices (or as Locke said…”you make your own luck.”). Widmore also told Desmond “I’m not the one who hates you,” so this may make sense that Ben is the one who “hates” Desmond. Widmore probably wouldn’t want anyone to get close to Penny if that person could be used as bait to “get” her, which could explain why he was so hateful to Desmond when he asked for permission to marry his daughter.
Stitch - interesting about Desmond being the chief wrecker of his relationship with Penny. What if first time around Des’ love for Penny brought her to the Island and ended in her death. This time around, his subconcious is desperately trying to ruin his relationship with Penny to protect her - hmmm I need to think about this a bit more!!
