I thought the first debate went well with both contestants arguing their points very nicely so let’s keep this debate ball rolling.

I believe that by the rules LOJOZZ, the current Debate King, is to be issued challenges and he is to decide which challenge that he will take. I also believe that the challenger gets to choose which side of the argument he will take. If I am wrong on this everybody please feel free to chastize me to your hearts’ content.

Since I do not see a huge number of challenges rolling in to the current champion (I think you have us scared Lojozz:) I think I will issue a challenge that is slightly different:

I will debate the current King on any Lost topic of HIS choice. I’m even open to having other members suggest the most evil and difficult topics they can think of and letting the King choose from among them.

Just a thought to keep the debate ball rolling…Your thoughts everybody?

    +1 very brave MSHL

I would like to see a debate about whether Jack is a good leader or not… please . I think the ‘against’ debater would have a hard time convincing the Jack fans but it should be a fairly balanced argument…thnx :)

Good stuff, MSHL. You’re definitely a good calibre of candidate for this.

(I seem to recall you suggested two viable debate points? I say let him pick from one of those two, and you can take the side you wish to take.)

  3. Lojozz May 6, 2008 5:03 a.m. Comment: 3

Thanks MSHL for getting this rolling again I’ve been a little busy of late so not had much time to move things forward.

wtf I think that is a good debate topic and I would happily argue against Jack being a good leader.

That science vs faith debate was a good one, I thought.

Very Lost. Plenty of meat on those debating bones. Much better than discussing Jack again. . .

  5. Lojozz May 6, 2008 5:26 a.m. Comment: 5

The Science vs Faith debate doesn’t inspire me I’m affraid, I just don’t see how any real conclusions can be drawn at this point.

  6. wtfsignmeup May 6, 2008 5:47 a.m. Comment: 6

Although you could never have a conclusion to the science vs faith argument it would be entertaining and interesting to see who could come up with the best argument.

Glad you liked my suggestion Lojozz., although AC makes a good point…. I find Jack endlessly entertaining myself lol.

I’m easy (just do’t tell my mom) when it comes to the topic Lojozz. You can pic if you want or you can go with member suggestions. Either way its fine with me.

Hey, how about who is in the coffin…

(I still say its a polar bear!)

  8. MyStarbuckHatesLost May 6, 2008 6:02 a.m. Comment: 8

Oh, I forgot. If you want to wait until the next episode to pick a topic that would be okay to. You never know what may be revealed that might spark an idea

  9. JacksEyes May 6, 2008 6:53 a.m. Comment: 9

The debate I would like to see, because its the one that keeps me awake at night, is “Did Daniel ever teach Eloise how to run the maze, and if so, how, when she already knew it?”

This is such a horrible topic that I mind-shifted into the future and now know that you will all ignore it and I didn’t blame you.

I’m glad that you don’t blame us :)

Well, I have some ideas for you guys concerning the recurring themes used on the show.

In the sense of Good vs. Evil

    • Ben: He´s one of the good guys.

    • The Others: Although they appear as bad for the things they´ve done, in the end it´s for the greater good.

    In the sense of sacrifice

    • Charlies death: Was it really such a good idea sacrificing himself?

    Mystery related

    • The Island: It is a living being and may be considered as an independent entity.

    • Smoke Monster: It´s main purpose is adjudication.

    Or more character oriented

    • John Locke: “All I did…all I have ever done, has been in the best interest of all of us.”

These points only serve as suggestions. I am not inclined to challenge anyone. Because I really enjoyed watching the former debate, it would be a shame if it was the first and last one realised.

+1 MSHL, Thanks for the comment you left, on my Poll post for “Who’s in the Coffin.”

This one might be a little tricky, as it would be about a lot of unknown’s…… Anyway,my suggestion is a debate about John Locke. As the episode is a Locke centric flashback“Cabin Fever”,it might be a poor subject . The core of it would be based the travel agent telling him, he will not allow him to go on this….”Walkabout”1.4

LOCKE: Hey, hey, don’t you walk away from me. [The wheelchair reveal]. You don’t know who you’re dealing with. Don’t ever tell me what I can’t do, ever. This is destiny. This is destiny. This is my destiny. (yelling) I’m supposed to do this, dammit. Don’t tell me what I can’t do. Don’t tell me what I can’t. . .

Argument for ,Locke has always known,(His Destiny) that it is a fact.

Argument against Locke is only learning it , as the story unfolds.

    just a suggestion…

  13. MyStarbuckHatesLost May 6, 2008 7:53 a.m. Comment: 13

Some good suggestions there SIT. I think that topics for debate should be on quantifiable subjects. For example: a debate on the subject “which religion is best” never gets anywhere because it is such a personal matter. But a debate on “Are the effects of religion on society positive or negative” can be judged on the basis of an argument’s merits, not on the personal feelings of those involved in regards to the topic.

is Ben one of the good guys” …well that kind of depends on your definition of good and the points of view of those who debate it and those who observe the debate.

Did ben fake the crash wreckage of 815”…an agrgument with a much less subjective slant that could be more reasonably debated without “personal point of view” being such a large factor.

These are just examples and I’m sure that Lojozz or myself could debate either side of either argument effectively but I think the second would be an example of something that is more presentable and arguable within the parameters of this type of debate structure.

    Does that make any sense?

    p.s.

Ac, thank you for the compliment in your first comment.

And WTF…perhaps I should learn the difference between brave and foolheardy :) (is that a Star Trek quote?)

  14. MyStarbuckHatesLost May 6, 2008 8:02 a.m. Comment: 14

You are very welcome KSJ. And when I wrote above that “I’m even open to having other members suggest the most evil and difficult topics they can think of…” I didn’t think anyone would take me seriously! :)

A very interesting suggestion and it would be tough to argue from either side. I’d probably lean towards the against argument but whether this is the topic or not I like seeing the varied and interesting suggestions coming in for the topic.

  15. Shasty May 6, 2008 8:33 a.m. Comment: 15

i think it only makes sense if the person who is challenged (King) gets to pick which side of the debate he/she would like to argue. Also, i think the debaters should be limited to a certain amout of words. Say 500, idk is that a lot?

  16. Lojozz May 6, 2008 8:33 a.m. Comment: 16

MSHL I think given you have put in this challenge you should certainly be the next to debate. So as far as I’m concerned its just a matter of deciding topic and timing. I would like to see this thread continue for a while to see what other devious suggestions we get.

As I said I’m pretty busy at the moment so delaying a bit suits me, that said I don’t want to delay so long we lose impetus. So perhaps we can say this thread will stay open till Friday at which point we will agree the topic and time of the deadline for posting arguments.

    Does that suit you?

Does anybody else have any objections?

  17. MyStarbuckHatesLost May 6, 2008 8:52 a.m. Comment: 17

Thank you Lojozz. If nobody has any objections that is perfectly fine with me. Any postings here could also lead us to topics for future debates as well.

I appreciate the “busy” thing. This is the busy season in my work and I have three days off between now and July 3…but there’s always time for a good verbal joust!

If all the members here keep posting their ‘devious” suggestions we should have no difficulty finding a topic that we are both satisfied with by then.

  18. Lojozz May 6, 2008 8:53 a.m. Comment: 18

Shasty we limited to 1000 for the last one and that seemed just about right.

  19. katesawjack May 6, 2008 8:56 a.m. Comment: 19

‘As the episode is a Locke centric flashback“Cabin Fever”,it might be a poor subject .”

I meant to explain…The reason being; there might be a lot more revealed concerning John’s birth and early years. So after this episode, we possibly could know a lot more about John Locke, than we had before!

Topic suggestion: Are the Losties (some or all) reliving the events of the island (for a second, third, fourth time, etc.) or is time linear, with each event having been experienced only once by each character?

    Or…

Will we discover that the future can or cannot be changed?

  21. SamiLost May 6, 2008 11:29 a.m. Comment: 21

    Topic suggestions:

    • Is Smokey controlled by Ben?

    • Who is in the coffin? (Just Joking! I already know it’s empty!!!)

  22. Hope May 6, 2008 2:48 p.m. Comment: 22

Topic Suggestion: Were the Losties manipulated (ex.by the island) into getting on O815 so they could crash on the island or are these just an unfortunate group of people whose plane crashed on the island?

  23. MyStarbuckHatesLost May 6, 2008 3:48 p.m. Comment: 23

Hi Hope. Your suggestion is very similar to one I was thinking about as a theory article or debate topic.

Mine went like this: “Is the observed interconnectedness of the Losties prior to the crash random chance or was it directly influenced by the island?”

  24. abstractarzt May 6, 2008 7:17 p.m. Comment: 24

Here’s a couple items I’ve pretty much taken for granted, but it seems everyone else is on the other side.

1- you can have multiple constants. Everyone seems to be thinking that you can only have one.

2- The flashforwards in TTLG are before those in SNBH.

3- Jack “saved” Kate at her trial vs Jack saved Kate by getting her rescued.

I’ve actually been working on a timeline for the flashforwards, but if you choose to debate #2 I won’t mine (I did put it in here). I would like to see the constant be debated since a) it seems so obvious to me b) there are way too many constant theories for me to throw yet another up, although I may if you don’t debate it. and c) it would totally debunk several theories like Ben and Widmore are each other’s constant.

So, I vote +1 for multiple constants
