There has to be a reason that these particular people are the ones who get off the island. Just what are the circumstances under which they leave?

Here’s the scenario I picture:

The Losties are reunited at the beach. Sawyer is there but he has still not found Clair yet. Hurley returns safely as Locke promised so all of the O-6 are present except for Sayid who is still on the freighter.

Lapidus returns with the helicopter and agrees to take Jack (who is recovering from surgery) back to the freighter for medical attention from the (apparently alive) Doc Ray. Kate, of course would go along (carrying a letter from Sawyer to Clementine his daughter and a promise to deliver it for him) Sun goes as Jin insists she leave the island. Hurley goes along because everybody loves Hugo and since he now feels responsible for the baby as Sawyer probably pushed little Aaron off on him. He also, realizes or is later made to realize, that Kate should take the baby as there is no other possible explaination for him having one with him. Only these people are taken because there is, as Lapidus loves to repeat, a weight limit.

Here’s where it could get interesting…Something prevents the helicopter from returning to the island after the Oceanic-6 are flown off of it. It could be a hurricane, the island’s volcano could erupt…something happens to force the freighter to leave the island’s vicinity. My preferred theory is that Ben somehow uses the island’s power or gets Jacob to use his power, to drive the freighter away. Maybe he sicks the smoke monster on the freighter.

The freighter must have no choice in leaving and if this is the case, it returns to the mainland with a problem: how to explain the Oceanic-6 who are all supposedly dead.

At this point, the captain (undoubtedly under instructions from Charles Widmore) makes a deal with the O-6–never reveal where you were, stick to the cover-up story we are about to give you and shut your mouths. If not, you and all of the people remaining on the island will be killed.

Once the freighter leaves the island it also loses the ability to find the island again…it seems that finding it in the first place was a stroke of luck even though Widmore has probably been searching for it for a very long time. This is why Ben seems so certain that CW will never find the island when he pays him a late-night visit in his London Penthouse.

One question that I do have is this: Does Desmond return to the island or does he just blend in as part of the crew when the freighter makes port again? I believe it is the latter because he would be awfully difficult to explain too.

This would also result in the stranding on the island of Widmore’s team of scientists and mercenaries

And as a final note, Since Ben is determined to kill Penny Widmore (which probably causes her father to put her in hiding) won’t this complicate Desmond’s plans to reunite with her when he returns to England?

Isn’t that an irony…Desmond gets found only to discover that it is Penny who has now vanished.

This I think, is actually the most plausible theory I’ve read so far. It precisely explains how the 06 get off the Island and why only they leave. But I have a few things to notice if you don’t mind:

    • How about Micheal?
    • When Jack says: “He chose to stay.” There is something strange about that because when Sawyer thought he would go on the next helicopter trip, he wouldn’t “choose” to stay, but rather ” wait for the next trip”. “He choose to stay” rather sounds like Sawyer chose to abandon Kate.
    • Why does Sun cries so much at the graveyard? Is it because she is sad he is dead, or because she wishes that he was here and not on the Island?
  2. MyStarbuckHatesLost May 5, 2008 8:04 a.m. Comment: 2

    Good questions Mosh

    How about Micheal?

Maybe he just blends in with the freigher crew but more likely (I think) he somehow saves the freighter in an act of heroic selflessness to allow the O-6 a chance to be rescued and as an act of redemption for his past actions.

    Sawer choosing to stay

I can very easily hear Sawyer saying to Kate “Go on Freckles, get out of here…I’ll catch the next ride. Just one thing…I need you to do me a favor if something happens to me…”

    Sun crying at the graveyard

Perhaps it is out of the guilt over her lies about the rescue and the knowledge that Jin is still trapped on the island with no way for them to be together. Or perhaps something happens to Jin as the 6 are leaving…maybe the Widmore mercenaries attack the beach camp as the chopper is taking off and Sun sees Jin gunned down.

about sawyer, i think he wont leave claire behind. so at the time he has the chance to leave, he chooses to go looking for claire instead. i like your theory +1

  4. katesawjack May 5, 2008 8:17 a.m. Comment: 4

MSHL, + 1 I like this scenario for How “TheOceanic 6” leave the island . If indeed they do get off in the helicopter,as Sayid is already on the freighter, that leaves 5. As Lapidus thought he could only take three at a time,(Weight problem) I think the first one’s would be Jack, and Sun. Leaving Hurley Kate, & Aaron.Hurley has stated in the FF forward I should have went with you Jack ! Maybe he meant when they leave?

As for Kate & Aaron , Claire has probably not been found, and so Sawyer maybe tells Kate to take Aaron with her to make sure that he(Aaron gets off, (as that would be what Claire would want)

I just thought of this maybe Hurley tell Jack in the future that he should have went with him, because Jin also wants to go on the second trip which would make it too heavy. So Jin doesn’t go and they can not return (for some reason) for him or others that want to leave.

Hopefully we will know what really did happen before this season ends !!

Thanks for answering! The answers you gave also sound very plausible. And I’d like to say I absolutely like your point of view on the 06. Nice job!

Thanks belle13. And I like that idea about Sawyer. I could see him doing just that. How he has changed since season-1

  7. Iamanewbie May 5, 2008 8:22 a.m. Comment: 7

I thought that Saywer had a conversation with Kate. Didn’t he ask her why she even wanted to get off of the Island. What did she have to look forward to? Being arrested? I thought he clearly told her that he wanted to stay on the Island, even if she chose not to. I thought that he was willing to leave her knowing that there was nothing for him off the Island. I do like your theory a lot! +1

  8. Annie79 May 5, 2008 8:26 a.m. Comment: 8

MyStarbucks, it’s plausible and certainly one scenario I’ve considered. I thought it would be someone else rescuing the O6, like Penny, but I do like your theory, so +1 for you!!

belle, good thoughts, as well. :)

and how about the spoiler that says that not the people on the frigther are the ones who save the losties ?? My guess is penny, so pretty much your theory solves away…

  12. MyStarbuckHatesLost May 5, 2008 9 a.m. Comment: 12

Agreed, but I don’t think the terms bad and good can be applied to Ben in the traditional sense. His goal is simply to protect the island at any cost. To him, bad and good are meaningless terms in regards to his actions. Only the goal has meaning. He applies the terms to other people but only, I think, in terms of can they help me protect the island or do they fit in with our agenda on the island.

Of course, Ben seems to have added a new item to his agenda…”I’m going to kill your daughter…”

Hi Marius , If you have a link to that spoiler I’d love to see it. Okay, I admit it, I’m a spoiler junkie!!!

  14. IamJacob May 5, 2008 9:18 a.m. Comment: 14

i like this idea, but i think something really bad is going to happen before they leave, which would explain why Jack doesn’t want to see Aaron.

Marius, you suck. You should warn when you drop a spolier.

It’s also lame of you to read up on spoilers and then come to a theroy website and comment on why peoples theories are wrong because you cheated.

(spoiler warning!) I’m sorry, but i’ve seen a preview for 4x11 and you clearly see claire changing aarons diapers with sun next to her, on the beach. Just for one second though. Just search: ‘Lost Cabin Fever’ on Youtube. So this theory is not very plausible.

Thank you, MysterySolver. I was able to catch your warning and avoid reading the rest of your comment, as I hate spoilers.

    That’s how you do it.

  18. beeker May 5, 2008 10:27 a.m. Comment: 18

Reasonable theory and it fits all of their character personalities, but (besides the spoilers) I can’t imagine the Captain bargaining with the Losties. He is a murderous fiend! The Captain has to die for this to happen, then the Losties takeover the freighter and THEN bargain with CW.

i have seen that promo too, and the clip you are referring to is from the beginning of the end. there is also a clip of sayid and juliet sat on the beach and that is a clip from a previous episode too. i hate that they do this, but they do it all the time.

and anyway (spoiler warning!!!!!!!!) - i have seen promotional photos from the episode and you can see calire in jacobs cabin.

This is great. +1. The part that puzzles me is why Lapidus would agree to take so many. (oh yeah, and the “weight limit” problem before also had fuel issues, he didn’t have enough fuel to carry more weight.) Jack maybe, and ok possibly Kate to play nurse in the helicopter, but why anyone else? Faraday made it really clear that they weren’t going to take anyone off the island. Sayid had to make a deal (a con) with Lapidus to get taken off the island. I think they will have to either force lapidus to fly them off or con him to do it.

Sawyer, Jin, and Michael all die!

    Its gonna suck

  22. LOSALIA May 5, 2008 4:28 p.m. Comment: 22

i think that it is Ben who “allows” these 6 to leave as a compromise. The other people want to stay, but these six want to leave. We know Sun has to, we know Jack wants to leave (I don’t know why, he’s prolly just sick of Ben), Kate wants to (I guess she wants to face her life “mess”), Hurley, well, he’s Latino so of course he wants to see his mom/family again, Aaron — Kate takes him prolly cuz they are afraid of Ben stealing him/raising him like he did to Alex. I think the Freighter people all die or go loony somehow. My big question mark is Desmond! Obviously he is going to play a big role in upcoming epsisodes/seasons as Penny’s protector from Ben. I’m sure it will take a long time for Penny/Desmond to be reunited - I’m sure the writers will draw that one out. Thats OK cuz I love their story! My other big question mark is who really paid for the fake plane wreckage? I’m leaning towards the fact that Ben & Widmore did it in concert. They keep blaming the other, but that is just a sympathy trick.

  23. MyStarbuckHatesLost May 5, 2008 4:33 p.m. Comment: 23

Thanks abstractarzt . I now amend my theory to add: As the 6 are trying to get off the island Widmore’s mercenaries attack the beach camp and there is a mad dash to the chopper. Hurley gets aboard by stepping on many of the other Losties.

I say that tongue in cheek of course but I do believe that some chaotic event happens as they are getting ready to take Jack & Kate (and I have to add Sun to that) off the island that affects who gets on the chopper.

  24. Smokey_ May 5, 2008 5:06 p.m. Comment: 24

i say desmond goes back to the island on the chopper to take the losties back and in the middle of the fight on the beach and the dash for the chopper he tells hurley to go in his place and find penny…. hurley cant find penny cause penny is looking for the island out in the artic … or locked away by CW and he begins to go crazy and wants to go back to tell des he couldn’t help …. just a thought

  25. abstractarzt May 5, 2008 5:51 p.m. Comment: 25

I would like to see sawyer on the chopper with them. Then something like:

(the helocopter is about 10 feet off the beach, all hell is breaking loose) Lapidus: “we’re too damn heavy, we’re not gonna make it”

Sawyer: “ah damnit!! here freckles, promise me you’ll give this to my daughter” (hands note to Kate and starts to jump, takes a look back)

Kate: “how am I supposed to find you daughter?”

Sawyer: “just do it we don’t have this much time”

Kate: “ok I’ll find her somehow”

Sawyer jumps back down to the beach where keamy and co are shooting everything up with automatic weapons and RPG’ing all the tents.

Kate (with puppy dog eyes): “Jamessssssssss”

Jack: “yeah, I could have jumped to but I wasn’t next to the door”

Belle13, good catch with the pic, but the girl could also be Annie, Bens childhood friend. The girl in the back looked to me alittle to young to be Claire. +1 Starbuck.

MSHL, Very well written and a nice job overall. +1

I happen to believe Desmond, Sayid, Michael and The Captain go to “the island” to help our “losties” fight Keamy and Company. And, some will die, while some by choice and not by choice remain on “the island” as you suggest.

It would seem likely in all of the ensuing chaos, “the six” who are rescued are the ones who make it to the location of the helicopter first, which is closer to the beach, I think. I believe it only seats six, if I recall correctly as well.

  28. MyStarbuckHatesLost May 6, 2008 3:01 a.m. Comment: 28

But wait…If Hurley gets on the chopper with the baby that makes Desmond’s flash really weird…mistaking Hurley for Claire???!!! He needs to get his Premonition”s eyesight checked a.s.a.p.!!!

    Thanks PortRoyalWenk & Dab

And good addition to the scenario abstractarzt, The only change that I would make is that Sawyer hesitates just before jumping out and, when Kate isn’t looking, Jack shoves him out the door…he then starts looking around all innocent-like while whistling a little tune. :)

    Hi there, nice post.

One thing - what about when Desmond tells Charlie in the back end of Season 3 that he sees Claire and Aaron get on a helicopter in a vision if Charlie dies in the looking glass? If that is the case, why is she not one of the Oceanic 6 and when does she get on a helicopter?

    Any thoughts welcome

    Richard
