Jack has always had a hairy chest—yet in the FF he’s clean as a whistle (as Sawyer is). And that seems to be drawn attention to be the whole shaving scene on island as well. Then throw in the fact that Miles asks if Sawyer is Claire’s big brother

— jazprof

When Jack tripped on the Millenium Falcon, it immediately made me think of Sawyer as I identify Sawyer with Han Solo. And I saw a couple pages back that Fernella noticed that the SOB phrase was a Sawyer catch phrase. There’s another very odd link—which is that Jack has always had a hairy chest—yet in the FF he’s clean as a whistle (as Sawyer is). And that seems to be drawn attention to be the whole shaving scene on island as well. Then throw in the fact that Miles asks if Sawyer is Claire’s big brother. I know Fernella also asked about when Kate played nurse to Jack—and everyone rightly pointed to the Pilot episode. But actually the scene in which Kate is supporting Jack and helping him walk is more reminiscent of when Kate was nursing Sawyer. (Who during that period seemd to speak in the personality of Kate’s dead Father.)

The names of the male characters have always seemed to point to something about their interchangeability—James, John, Jack. And then a “sawyer” could be a surgeon. “Jarrah” means cutter which can also mean surgeon. Not sure, but “Desmond” might be close to “James” as well.

What does all this mean? I’m not sure—but I have a hunch it has something to do with the mind travel and Smoky manifesting as dead people. If consciousnesses can travel through time—can identities of people get scrambled? And people who have mind travelled—I think there are versions of some of those displaced time travelling consciousnesses still around for which Smokie provides a physical shell.

One other thought about this episode. In the FF Jack is told he is not supposed to raise Aaron. This presumably is the will of the island. Yet on island, the Christian Shepard apparition takes Claire away, leading we assume to Jack and Kate raising Aaron. So is it the island’s will that guides that apparition or an opposing force?

I think there’s interesting observations here, but I’d withdraw from pulling the ‘mixed personalities’ into a fleshed-out concept. Maybe Jack was being more like Sawyer purely to kind of, you know, be more like Sawyer because that’s who Kate loves? Or maybe Kate - the way women can do to their men! - has influenced his behaviour into being more like Sawyer’s character.

As for Aaron not being raised by Jack. Perhaps Claire was taken away to keep Aaron there (the logic being that the Oceanic people would not part the two?). That being the case, why was Aaron left behind? Doesn’t make much sense, really. Hopefully it will.

Hi Jaz, Good to see you! You have brought up some interesting points,I’m going to have to let them digest a little, before (or if) I have anything to say. BTW AngeloComet has written about this Star Wars comparison on his blog. I couldn’t wait till tomorrow when he posts it here,so I sneaked a peek. +1

i also noticed how remarkably similar jack is to sawyer in the future (except for the yelling at kate). the chest, the son of a b*h, the brother thing, etc is just too much to ignore. i dont think it is to do with smoky though, i think it is just to show that that sawyer is very much present in jack and kates relationship - ergo - the triangle continues… :)

AC, I made my comment before yours got posted. lol

You mention shaving on the island did you notice when Kate is in the shower she tells Jack there is a new razor on the sink but he says what you don’t like the scruff? Then he picks up the razor looks at himself in the mirror and puts the razor down and walks out. So why didn’t he shave? I think this is a clue.

I don’t know. You are coming to conclusions on some pretty hardcore stuff, like smokey manifesting as dead people and mind travel. And you are reaching these conclusions based on a shaved chest and a spur-of-the-moment “Son of a B*h”? It seems like a reach, and you don’t provide nearly as much support as you usually do. -1

i dont know about your name theory. a sawyer is a lumberjack, not a surgeon. and desmond being close to james?

Sorry Jazprof, I am not on board with this theory either, I’m afraid.

I am unconvinced at this juncture if Claire is in fact dead. However, I recall the writers mentioning that some of “the deceased” characters are at times apparitions, and sometimes utilized by Smokie, so you never know. If Christian was appearing to Claire as “Smokie”, then it is quite possible she is dead.

It was written for Asland said so and made it that way as Asland had always planned.

Replace Asland with God, or how about, the Island, and there ya go!

    Jaz,

I couldn't agree more. I'm reading The Dark Tower series

right now because of it’s admitted influence on Lost - and without giving too much away by the second book they are doing exactly what you are describing. The characters are all mind traveling into others a la Being John Malkovitch. I really feel this is the center of all that’s going on. I will expand later - but the overwhelming similarities of the stories leads me to believe that John Locke will, indeed, be the hero of our story in the end. Also - toward this end - consider what Desmond said in his eerie conversation with Jack in “Man of Science, Man of Faith”, he said: “I was almost a doctor once.” Yes, this could be a man who considered being a doctor - but this could also be future Desmond the mind traveler saying to past Jack, “I’ve been you, I’ve taken control of your body as a doctor to lead you somewhere.”

Jaz there does seem to be a reversal of fates or at least a role reversal indicated in the episode and I love your theory although I’m not sure I agree with mind travelling being the reason. +1

    Hey all,

AC: I like your idea that Claire was taken away to keep Aaron on the island. I wonder if she’s going to wind up at the Temple.

Iroc: Sorry you didn’t like—I did do a kind of shortened version—some of the evidence was from my previous post “You Can’t Change the Future” and I prolly should have cited that.

I do think something is going on with disembodied consciousnesses though—besides just the mind travel. It makes sense to me that those consciousnesses get embodied by smokie. ‘Cause the writers have got to start tying some of these things together I think—kind of messy writing to have the mind travel explanation, and then a completely separate explanation (ghosts) for the appearances of Charlie and Christian.

Stone: Yeah—you’re right—there wasn’t a Desmond/James connection—but upon further investigation, James and Jacob are variations of the same name (as are John/Jack). Des does have the everyman component though (trained to be a doctor/Jack, was a soldier/Sayid, man of faith-monk/Locke).

A Sawyer is more precisely a carpenter—a sawer of wood I think is the dereivation. There has been the connection made though by having Sawyer refer to Jack as “Sawbones.” Also Jack’s last name pairs him with a famous carpenter.

dabs: sorry didn’t mean to imply that Claire was dead. Just meant that the appearances of Charlie and Christian—could be not because they are ghosts, but might have something to do with mind travel and fate being altered (ala my earlier theory).

Sounds good, jazzie. I like the reversal of fates with Jack and Sawyer.

Wanted to point as well, Jack telling Kate that Sawyer chose to stay on the island is reminiscent of Sawyer and Kate’s escape from Alcatraz island as seen in Stranger in a Strange Land…

KATE: We have to go back.

SAWYER: What the hell are you talking about?

KATE: Turn the boat around, Sawyer. I mean it.

SAWYER: Have you lost your mind? We just got away.

    KATE: Just do it.

SAWYER: You give me one good reason to turn around!

KATE: Because we can’t leave Jack behind!

SAWYER: Yes we can, Freckles, because that’s what he asked us to do.
