LOST-Theories.com

How we can avoid clogging up the site with non-theories and observations. I know this will only apply for the next few weeks until we run out of new episodes for this season but…

We’ve all noticed how fast a page fills up with posts on this site after a new episode of Lost airs. It makes it harder to find a previous post if it is already three pages back after only a day or two.

So I have an idea (forgive me if this has been brought up before)

Right after a new episode of Lost airs, a user (who is the first to post a non-theory observation) puts up a post with the title: post your non-theory observations here for the episode-”the constant” or whatever the episode title happens to be. And in the body of the post the user writes the same thing: post your non-theory observations here for the episode-”the constant”. The poster then writes their observations and non-theories about that episode in the comments section of their own posting.

Anybody else who has non-theory observations (on that particular episode only) also adds their observations in the comments section of that posting instead of putting up a new, separate posting on the site.

I think this would free up some space on the site so it isn’t flooded with new non-theories right after a new episode airs. That way, we can see mostly theories posted (after all, the site is called Lost-theories)

There are other kinds of postings that get put up such as surveys, the new debate topics, etc. but this would just be for non-theory observations, recaps, notes, or general info about one particular episode. This would also make it easier to read observations from our users all in one place without having to open a new, possibly 2 or 3-sentence posting every time.

Does this sound like it might work or am I just barking up the wrong smoke monster. What are your thoughts?

I think that this is a fabulous idea, but don’t you think that those posts that you are referring to are usually from brand-new members? I don’t know how you would get them on board with this, because, as we can plainly see, new users don’t generally do a whole lot of research before they post (not all, but many). But if you can get it going, I am totally for it!

    +1

MSHL,I like this idea very much. I liked the idea Lojozz had for the Debate Club for that very reason.

How we can avoid clogging up the site with non-theories and observations.”

Also on the subject ot “The Debate Club”,I was closely involved with that,as I tabulated the vote count. I looked back at Lojozz original post that suggested it,and about half of the people that thought it would be a good idea ,didn’t even vote when it came to fruition. There are circumstances that arise to account for that, I am sure… But it could be as you have said because posts can easily disappear from the first page in a day,it could be part of the reason.

There was a similar idea about having a post to use for questions only, that seemed like a good idea at the time. It was buried, and soon forgotten.

Frankly,I think only the most die-hard users of this site have the time or ambition to search though pages and pages of the material that accumulates in a very short time. I think it could work, but only if the majority of posters adhere to it. For suggesting it though. +1

Maybe all of the Lost theory elitists should disband from this site and make your own members only site….maybe you can even have a special debate club section for those super duper members that spend more than 5 hours a day theorizing.

Sounds good, I will do my best to comply, because it take a lot of time to read through 23 theories before I can start getting to my theories/observations. Good episode last night though, answered a lot of questions and didn’t raise too many tough ones.

    So_Lost

I will post the data “Notice” posting the afternoon of the day the new episode aires with the heading “NEW USERS AND ALL OTHERS: PLEASE READ BEFORE posting anything TODAY” with the info on what we are doing here.

Anyone who doesn’t want to follow this format is free to post away. it isn’t mandatory but it might help. I just posted this Idea yesterday and it is already 3 pages back.

The first poster of the night (or one of the posters) has to put up the initial posting of the evening for people to place their comments on.

I can’t as I am at work when Lost aires so one of our stalwart members will have to do this :)

katesawjack good points and good work on your debate club efforts. I think it went well for a trial run.

I’m going to post this again tonight to get some more feedback

this is a very nice idea, here’s another:

Why not just encourage people to flag non-theories as non-theories. I’ll be the first to admit that I read posts that aren’t theories and just move on to the next one without flagging it. From what I’ve seen it doesn’t take that many votes to get something knocked over to the non-theory section. Of course you will get those people that will complain about their observation being moved to the non-theories section, but I feel those same people won’t comply to your nice idea here.

… I feel those same people won’t comply to your nice idea here. ”

Probably true abstractarzt, but if it cuts down congestion on the first few pages by some of us doing this, it will still help a lot.
