Just a theory on bearings

  1. It’s pretty well established that the magnetic anomaly associated with the island is distorting space-time. Aside from the hints given in past episodes we got virtual proof today in the form of Mr. Faraday’s experiment.

  2. If the magnetic anomaly is naturally occuring (or really even if it isn’t), it’s likely that the strength of the magnetic field is not uniform.

Therefore…

  1. It would seem to follow that the magnitude of the space-time distortion is not uniform either. In this way, areas of space-time that coincide with greater field strength could be curved more.

  2. As a result, the effect on an individual’s personal time would vary depending on their velocity vector and position within the distorted space-time.

  3. The distortion could have a sort of symmetric quality wherein travelling through it in one way could have the opposite effect on an individual’s time as travelling through it in the opposite way.

What we get from all this is the following:

A. If you leave the island along the same bearing as you came in on then the effects cancel out and you won’t have strange things happen to your personal timeline. Explains: Dan’s warning to Lapidus the pilot.

B. If you leave the island along a different bearing as you came in on, you will have asymmetric effects happening to your personal time. It’s not hard to see where this is going. Explains: Polar Bear in Tunisia

Other things that this may explain:

I. Ben’s instructions to Michael. Either Ben was having them leave along the same bearings as Oceanic 815 came in on and was legitimately saving them, OR he was sending them on a different course, off into oblivion to get rid of them, OR he was sending him on a different course to put him into a position to be his man on the boat, OR ?????

II. Ben’s seemingly boundless ability to acquire information and affect the course of events. Perhaps Ben is using the island as a time-travel device.

III. The ‘coincidences’ that led to this specific group of people coming to be on Oceanic 815 and their subsequent survival. Perhaps Ben or someone else is using the island as a time-travel device for this as well.

iv. whispers. As sound waves travel through the distortion, they’re bounced around in time and space.

V. Jacob’s cabin and its ability to hop around at will.

VI. Richard’s lack of aging effect.

VII. And so on…

One important point here for all of you ‘31 minutes’ theorizers is that 31 minutes would be the variance due to the route that the payload took through the disturbance, but not necessarily for any other routes
