In ‘Eggtown’ Kate’s mother says that the doctor told her she had “6 months to live for the past 4 years.”

To me this looks like another case of the island intervening to prevent certain people’s deaths as experienced by Michael, Jack and Locke’s dad.

I realise this isn’t hugely interesting in itself and unfortunately I don’t have any theory as to what Kate’s mothers ‘work’ might be.

Still. It got me thinking about the mounting evidence that the ‘island’ has powers of life and death over people, the ability to alter fate if you will, and that you don’t have to have visited the island to be subject to these powers.

An example of the island using it’s powers in a ‘less positive way’ would be when Juliet’s boss Edmund is ‘coveniently’ run over by a bus. This is not the sort of thing that could be predicted or planned by even the most cunning of evil geniuses.

Which begs the question of how the ‘others’ seem to know what the will of the ‘island’ is and how it seems to work in their favour. How could Tom possibly know that the island won’t let Michael die (that’s such a handy thing for Ben BTW who is on the lookout for a potential ‘man on boat’) unless the island had somehow passed this information onto the others?

Perhaps this is where Jacob comes into play. Perhaps Jacob effectively IS the island or, at least is the keeper and wielder of it’s mysterious power.

Remember when the island speaks to Locke… “Help Me…”. This would suggest that Jacob is imprisoned in some way would it not? What if it’s Ben that has somehow imprisoned Jacob and gained leverage over him? Would that not mean that Ben could actually be behind the islands/Jacobs interventions?

It would certainly explain how the hell Tom knew Michael wouldn’t be able to kill himself, how Ben was able to cure Juliet’s sisters cancer and probably a whole lot more besides.

Anyway, I realize there are a few leaps of faith required here, that a lot of the ideas presented are not new and that there are probably a few holes as well. Hope you enjoyed it anyway.

Yes this is an interesting read. But, sadly for you my friend, this is yet another theory that is strecthing it. There is a chance you could be right, but most of these we simply have no proof what so ever.

I agree with X, this is such a stretch. And the implications would be that everyone who has a near death experience is spared to do the island’s bidding. I’m also not convinced that its the island as much as it is regular old run of the mill fate.

I was surprised that kate’s mom was still alive as I thought she died after kate visited her in the hospital, but I think this has something to do w/kate needing her or somehow redeeming herself so much that her mom wouldn’t testify against her. OR her mom is as selfish as she is and just wants to see who this baby is she brought home? anyway, the way the protrayed it, she should have been dead, so?”??

I like this, and don’t think its such a stretch. Perhaps it was Kates mums u-turn in court that helped to sway the jury along with Jacks character refernece and prevented Kate going to jail….if the island wants her back for whatever purpose then yes it makes sense.

    +1 from me anyway :)

OceanicJC, nice out of the box thinking! I don’t think it’s a stretch either. It did serve it’s purpose, getting Kate out of jail. Now maybe Kate has ‘work to do’. I like it.. +1

Kind of like Rose and her cancer…does she have work to do too or did the island just “heal” her?
