the recurring theme seems to be that everything that is happening on the island is “predetermined” and each character has his/her role that they MUST play in these events. the island’s power (or perhaps destiny itself) will somehow make sure these roles are carried out.
ie: Walt appears to Locke to get him out of the graveyard and over to stab Naomi. Michael cannot kill himself, his work is not done. Ben states many times “the island will not let you leave”, especially to Jack. a young Ben is told “not yet, be patient” and eventually gets his wish and participates in the Purge.

I’m trying to compile a list of all the times that phrase has been used to give us insight on whose fate is tied to the island.
Fate does seem to be a pervasive theme at this juncture. I think free will can still play an important role in the final outcome. For instance, had Des not turned the failsafe, who knows what could have happened..
