You’ve got to remember what Mrs Hawkins and Faraday have stated – you can’t change the future and the fact that the universe will eventually course correct itself – that is some people on the island (or ‘the island’) have the ability to keep people alive just like Desmond kept Charlie ‘alive’ – the island or should I say Desmond wouldn’t let him die.

I’ve posted quite a few theories on how I think people on the island have ‘flashes of the future’ like Desmond does. Read my other theories if you wish to. http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/may/30/future-and-past-seeing-abiliti/ http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2008/mar/09/ben-can-see-future-other-ep6-o/ http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/may/30/flashes-future-and-flashing-li/ After Tom said the island wouldn’t let Michael die I think this was a clear reference to the ‘island’ being the people on the island and not the island being an actual physical form in its own right. Tharde also posted an excellent theory on ‘fate-benders’ which I think some people on the island are.

Tom could have easily swapped the gun or the guy who gave the gun to him could have been in on the plot (been an other that is).

Remember what Ben said to Mikhail – ‘I thought you were dead’ – to which Mikhail replied ‘the fence was set to stun’. Ben said this tongue in cheek because he or Mikhail saw into the future and one of them went to the fence to set it to stun so that Mikhail wouldn’t die (see my earlier theory for more detail on this).

So who actually can see into the future – Desmond can definitely can – almost certainly Jacob can too – probably Ben and maybe Mikhail as he looks like he has been exposed to a lot of electro-magnetism. Desmond is obviously unaware of what it all means and flashes don’t happen all the time as Desmond pointed out ‘it doesn’t work like that’ and he doesn’t get flashes all the time – hence why Tom may have ended up being shot dead – Ben didn’t see his cancer coming etc etc.

Further evidence to this is the ‘confidence’ of the characters off island – in Jin Yeon Hurley didn’t seem like Hurley – like he was a jedi almost (the future is hard to see – the dark side clouds everything – yoda - LOL!)

I believe Faraday wanted to get to the island as it is the only place in the world that has enough power and electromagnetism for people to be able to see into the future – that was what his experiment with the mouse was about but maybe the past can be changed also!

i absolutely disagree…desmond doesn’t see the future, he saw the dead of charlie when he turn the key, that’s all. his mind travel time, but not in the future but in the past, forget time travel or time line, its not that! read this: http://lost-theories.com/theories/2008/mar/21/discredited-theories-observati/ and read what i will write in the few minutes…

I don’t think he was time traveling when he was seeing the flashes of Charlie dying. If he were, I think he would have died from lack of a constant and not understanding what to do.

I agree with luv, I think whatever was going on with the ability to see the future was different than the consciousness shifting that Des was doing.

Slicer, just read you’re theory and you have virtually said the same thing - mind travel, flashes of the future - they are all the same but i think flashes of the future are what they are but mind travel occurs when Des goes back in time. What makes this possibleand is the meteor was on Rousseaus map- you’ll have to read lostsemiotics theory n this - http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/may/31/bens-evil-project-island/

So Eloise’s conscience didn’t go into the future and learn the maze then. It must have just been a lucky run. +1 for highlighting an important issue.

So Desmond goes back to give Daniel the correct settings. Daniel zaps Eloise and she runs the maze. Unbeknown to either of them, Ben went back an hour earlier and taught Eloise how to run the maze. Daniels mind-sending-forward machine never actually worked!

It was Eloise’s fate to run the maze so could not die until she had done. She then immediately died of old age. Sorry, sarcasm. Its my destiny.

Genuine question though: Did Eloise’s conscience get sent into the future ?
