I’m completely debunking my own previous theory here, but what the hell :)

Mrs Hawkins told Desmond he had to turn the key or “everyone of us will die”.

So he needed to turn the key to save the world.

Turning the key caused the station to implode, and some kind of electro-magnetic pulse, and it also made the island visable to those looking for it, i.e. Widmore and Co.

So the only logical conclusion is that Widmore finding the island is what saves the world.

Unless…….

Penny is also trying to find the island, so perhaps she has her own team looking and there will be a military showdown between Widmores people and her people, with the losties/others taking sides depending on their own agenda and who they believe to be “right”. But the key still had to be turned in order for the final showdown to resolve things once and for all.

Save the world from what or who?

I guess we’ll find out, but hasnt that been a constant question throughout?
