All he needs is a white cat to stroke and he is the archetype of evil genius.

— jax

I have pondered these things before, but while watching episode 8 last night, I had a moment of realisation, an epiphany, and suddenly it all makes perfect sense.

My theory claims that Ben is the good guy, especially after last nights episode, and while some of his methods may be questionable, his penultimate goal is to protect the island from Widmore, the DI, and others who would seek it for reasons I shall go into, and thus protect the world from a power unimaginable.

The crux of my reasoning is that it appears anyone who spends time on the island is left with a reminder once they go back to civilisation. They cannot die. Jack could not die - he tried to jump but then he was forced to attend an accident. We have seen now how Michael cannot die. Now, Sun, Sayid and Kate may not realise this yet…but that’s because they haven’t tried. Only Jack and Michael have tried and realised the truth, and this is why Jack was trying to convince Kate that they have to go back but she wouldn’t believe him. Perhaps before then, Hurley realised the same thing and that’s why he was trying to convince Jack.

To realise that you will never die off the island, would make anyone want to go back whether suicidal or not….just to know that they can live their lives and have the peace of mind to know that when its their time, it really is their time. Perhaps Regina was testing this theory and is chilling out on the ocean floor Boot-Strap-Bill style lol. Ok maybe not that last bit :)

Can you imagine what kind of army you could build with soldiers that couldn’t die? That’s the crux of my theory, just think about it. Why is what appears to be a small village, referred to as “The Barracks”? What where the DI really up to there? Could they have been training soldiers under the guise of a peaceful mission? Brainwashing them, experimenting on them, conditioning them. Experimenting with biological warfare (the gas)

I think this is the reason for the purge. Richard and his buddies approached Ben as a child because they could see he was a mis-fit, he was different, he hated being there. I am betting they were there a long long time before technology came to the island in the hands of the DI (interesting that the Valenzetti Equation states technology will cause the end of the world….technology on that island could) and Jacob was there even longer. When Richard first approached Ben and realised he had seen his mother, it marked him out as someone who could communicate with the island and help them wipe out the threat, which he later did.

Now that Widmore has found the island, we are starting to see a blur in the lines between good and evil. There is no doubt in my mind that Widmore wants the island to build an army, to become the most powerful force in history. All he needs is a white cat to stroke and he is the archetype of evil genius.

There are many other questions that I need to fit in with this theory. For example….why do pregnant women die. Perhaps this is just a side effect of the properties on the island, a form of cancer, or perhaps its because its a trade off. If life is extended once off the island, then life is controlled while on it. I need to thrash that one out a bit more.

So that’s my theory anyway, and I never thought I would say that Ben is a good guy, but I really think he is. This is why Sayid ends up working for him.

I like a lot of the theory, but I cant agree with it all as far as not being able to die goes. I think Tom implied that Mike couldn’t die because he still had work to do.btw Do you think the person in the coffin is not someone who was on the island?+1 for original ideas. and happy birthday

jax, first of all Happy Birthday!!!! (I know, not as good as wtf’s, but who is?? LOL)

+1 for a very interesting theory. I do have the same problem with it that wtf had. I think what Tom inferred was they can’t die until they complete something they have to do for the island. I don’t know if this includes all of the Oceanic 6, but it probably does.

    Have a great day!!!! :-)

Thanks for the birthday wishes….33…last time I remember I was 23 lol

I agree that it could be they have more work to do and the island needs them. It just seems that 2 running themes of this episode were Widmores motives and not being able to die. I guess we only have 1 month left to wait….time to watch the re-runs lol

I believe Tom implied that suicide was not an option and not that Michael was immortal.

    good theory i think

Clarification: All the evidence shows us is that one cannot commit suicide, not that you cannot die. The only evidence of off-island immortality is that Sayid gets shot but doesn’t die, but there are several logical explanations for that. Besides someone is in the coffin during the S3 finale, someone from the island does die off the island eventually.
