Why would Charles Widmore want to exploit the island. However, Widmore wants to find the island but what for - to exploit it? I don’t think so as he’s loaded already.

No, he may be seeking revenge on Ben for some reason and I bet some ex-dharma people had Widmore as their last name. But also I thinks its about power and being able to stay alive - people’s cancer going away - why if I’d had cancer and was loaded I’d do everything to get to the island. Ben wants to keep the island exclusive to the ‘others’ and even stated the ‘temple’ as not being for other people than them. It’s amazing how Ben has become a central character in the past few episodes - it is all about Ben!

I think he does want to exploit the island, because, like Lex Luthor, that’s just what the evil mastermind has to do for the rest of the show to make sense. Right Shaggy?

The fact that Widmore is already loaded doesn’t mean anything… Riches and power tend to always bring about greed, which is probably Widmore’s sole motivation for seekikng out the island.. So I disagree.. I think that we will all soon learn that Ben may actually be the “good guy”.. despite the measures he has taken to protect the island.

Windmore may turn out to be a good guy, but from all we’ve seen it seems he’s not. I take major issue with the “He has so much money. He doesn’t need any more.” Rich people are ALWAYS looking to get richer. Look at the major banking families in the US for example. They are constantly looking to gain wealth, but more importantly POWER. Imagine the power Windmore would gain if he had sole control over the gifts of the island. He could become the most powerful man in the world. And that seems like a big enough motive to me.

doesn’t that take us right back to him being a supervillan

    Two points:

    a) I’ve always gotten the sense that Widmore is not only after money and power but something more transcendental. Him buying Tovard Hanso’s Black Rock 1st mate’s diary may point to the fact that he wants to find the island, but he already has the freighter, so I think the may be interested in the mysterious “dry-land beaching” of the Black Rock. A bit far-fetched, but therefore he might be interested in harnessing this mystery for spiritual power to himself.

    b) More practically: I don’t think Widmore’s after Ben for revenge…what contact do they have?

+1 anyway for an interesting viewpoint.
