He needs to tie up all loose ends.

I was just thinking about the end of the episode “Confirmed Dead” where Naomi sees the picures of Charlotte, Miles, Daniel, and Frank and she does not understand why they have to go. She is then told that they each serve a specific purpose. I think their purpose is…. to die.
Remember what Ben told Locke. He said that Widmore wants to exploit the island for himself. He obviously wants Ben and the others dead, and based on his staging of the fake plane he has no plans of the real 815ers ever seeing the real world again. It appears that anyone that might know about the special properties of the island, he wants to kill.
So why would he send these four people to the island? I think that Widmore’s plan is to have all these people dead. He is trying to tie up all loose ends. Anyone who is a threat to his plan is fair game.
Frank: He is a drunk. But, they do need a pilot. He is on to the suspicion that the plane is a fake as we saw in “Confirmed Dead”. He told Widmore he thinks the plane is a fake and he told Michael “the owner of this ship believes me and thinks 815 is still out there”. So why would Widmore pick a drunk who is onto the suspicion that the plane is a fake to be his pilot? Because Widmore can’t have this guy running around asking questions about a possible fake plane. He is killing two birds with one stone. He gets a pilot and he eliminates someone who knows the plane he planted is a fake.
Charlotte: She was a threat as she has been researching the same stuff Widmore has been for the past few years. Widmore has been doing his homework for quite some time as we see him buy the Blackrock journal. But we also see Charlotte express a sense of joy when see discovers the polar beer with a Dharma logo. That logo was something she was familiar with. This indicates that she is also familiar with the island. Widmore can’t have that.
Daniel: They need a scientist, but why this mentalcase? He knows so much about the island before he even gets there. Some examples of this are the light scattering, the time difference, the constant, etc. He definitely knew about this place before officially arriving here. He seems to have more answers on the island than most of the Losties, and he has only been there a few days. This may have something to do with his meeting with Desmond. Widmore needs him dead once he has served his purpose.
Miles: This is a tricky one because so far all we know of Miles is that he is a ghostbuster. His flashback was very vague and didn’t reveal much. My only thought is that maybe he has encountered some of the dead 815ers (Libby, Boone, Shannon, etc.) during his “ghostbusting”. We have seen them all appear in ghost-like images of previous episodes. I also think that he knows where the real Flight 815 is when we see him in his flashback. When he pulls up to that house he hears the news of the 815 remains in the trench. When he hears that he gives a look of “confusion” or “disbelief”. He may already know where the real plane is and this could be why Widmore needs him on the mission.
When these four were chosen they were chosen for a specific reason and to serve a specific purpose. But mainly, Widmore chose them because he plans to have them die on the island once they served their purpose. He needs to tie up all loose ends.

Excellent theory. +1 from me.
This really makes sense though I had never thought of it this way before. I think Widmore could have killing them in mind. On the subject of Miles, whether he is a ghostbuster or a time-traveler, Widmore may realize his prodigious skill and consequentially potential to thwart his plans.
My thoughts exactly. Widmore needs these trouble makers out of the picture. +1
Irocz28 , This one I like +1 But I guess only time will tell
I like it but I’ve got to disagree - and that’s because of one main pioint -Do you trust Ben? It’s in Ben’s interests to ‘hide the island’ not Widmores (probably to save his own life) - Widmore wants to find the island but what for - to exploit it? I don’t think so as he’s loaded already.
I’m liking what I see. Although I think Miles was hired by Charles Widmore to communicate with Jacob
Nice input Joe. I never thought of it like that but you could be right.
I was assuming the Miles ghostbusting scene was a flashBACK, not a flashforward. not that it really matters for your theory as a whole, which I like!
Now that we have a situation where certain people are “supposed to die” or not, your theory seems even more plausible. Although, perhaps the island has different intentions for this particular team than Widmore. (Who knows WHAT the island plans might be…) +1
Great theory +1
great job
good theory..
Assuming you are right, Widmore may want Miles to remain alive for the reason Joe stated and to communicate with others who have died on the island (Magnus Hanso, Dharma Scientists, etc…).
Miles said something ominous to Ben in “Eggtown” which confirmed to me he is not only out for himself but that Charlotte may be “expendable”.
Ben: “Your friend Charlotte has seen me, she knows I’m alive.”
Miles: “I’ll take care of Charlotte. You just worry about getting me the. money. You have 2 days.”
Maybe Miles was sent to make sure Widmore’s plan for this team to be killed off is carried out.
Good theory.
This can all be assumed the opposite way. Lets assume Charles Widmore is NOT a bad guy. Let’s say he just wants to make money, as many business owners do, by selling the islands whatever.
What would any man who wanted to know more about his future investment do? Send experts to study and find a cause. But does he know exactly why the island does what it does?
No. So he brings 3 people who could find a reason for the islands ways. Perhaps its a scientific reason, a historical reason, or a spiritual reason.
What if Widmore didnt fake the 815 crash, what if Ben did, like the Captain said. Then Charles would probably RATHER have a pilot that doesnt believe the crash.
As for the heavily armed, special forces led team he also hires… What would you do if you heard that an entire scientific post was murdered by inhabitants of the island. I would think that safety would be of some concern.
I think this is all much more logical than Charles Widmore trying to “cover his tracks”. He will always need to hire someone to find and help him with the island. What is he going to do? Kill everyone? even if he wants to turn the island into a tourist attraction/hospital like Ben insisted? Doesnt make sense to me.
ps -1 sorry
This is a really good theory i had been wondering why Miles, Charlotte, Daniel and Frank had been sent to the island
Addicted2lost, you have good points. But like your first line noted we are all “assuming” many things on this site. You have to assume some things or it wouldn’t be Lost. I think you should post your own theory based on what you have above because you have some good ideas. But I don’t really see anything that disproves this theory.
Iroc - GREAT post!! Love the way you formatted it and broke it out simply. I totally agree with you except for one thing - I also think that Miles is working for/with Widmore to talk to Jacob. I can foresee that in the end, Widmore will make his intentions to kill the other three off and they will be totally surprised except Miles, who knew all along. What a great post! +1
Thanks Appolo. I wasn’t really sure on Miles’ part in the whole scheme, but a few people agree with you that it is to talk to Jacob. You may be right.
Good one Irocz28 !
This theory ties in all my thoughts about the freighter team together wonderfully.
I toyed with the idea of Charlotte possibly looking at the four-toed statue, but she did appear to have knowledge of Dharma. I think Widmore is to use Daniel to figure out how to harness and exploit the properties of the island, and Lapidus has an interest to get to the island, whilst also being an adept pilot.
I hope Miles is used in connection to Jacob, or any of the so-called apparitions that we see on the island. It’s the only explanation I can come up with.
But I definitely agree that they’re all going to be exploited, just as long as it takes to give Widmore what he wants from the island. Then it’s off with their heads. ;]
+1!
