If we are led to believe that you cannot change the future, then I think the idea that Dharma was there to stop the Valenzetti Equation is false. Faraday, Ms. Hawking, and references to course correction all tell us that the future cannot be altered. So no matter what Dharma did the equation would have happened, and humanity would’ve ended.

But if this date came (the equation date), and you just so happened to be on an island seemingly not part of normal space-time, would it still affect you? Dharma’s “Saving the World” could simply have meant that they are going to go back out and repopulate after everything goes down.

Does this mean Ben saw that they were just going to let everyone else die, and purge them in order to use the island as a place to try and avoid it? I don’t think so, as he blocked all communication except Mikhail’s station. Does Ben classify people as “good” and “bad”, and possibly want to hand pick his own group of people to do this with? Maybe.

This equation is supposed to happen some time in the near future, putting Widmore alive still. Maybe he knows about this, and would like to live. Just like anyone else anywhere in the world that found out about the same situation. Except he has the power and means to find it. This is why Ben has to keep everything about the island so secretive. Any information getting out would just cause too many people to try and find and become a part of the island, which Ben doesn’t think is acceptable. We know Ben is a man of at least some faith (the island/jacob), so maybe he thinks this is his chance to make the right humanity based on his ideals, morals, or rules. This puts him in a very gray area of being good enough to re-start the population, but bad enough to let everyone die first.

Widmore, on the other hand, is already unbelievably powerful. The only thing people with this much power want, of course, is more power. This island gives him the most power that anything can possibly give. Control of what happens when the human race becomes extinct.

So, my point is: They are both evil.

You are silly. The Dharma people were not saving the world in the first place, that was just a training thingy for the people in the hatch.

You can’t change the future but you can change the past to alter the present…that’s what I believe anyway…see end of Lost: Via Domus (videogame).
