When she is giving birth, the doctor says he wants to do a c-section because “the medication makes natural birth difficult”

Now, there are no pain relief meds that would be given to a woman in labour that would make labour difficult…it kind of defeats the object. So what is he referring to? Has she been on some kind of medication since leaving the island…and if so why and what? Is it something to do with conceiving the child on the island? The doctor seemed to know her…so it makes me wonder.

It actually quite common for women to receive pain medication for their time in labour, since the experience can be quite painfull for some soon to be mothers.

There are various ways the mother can receive the medication, one of them being an epidural.

The effects of the analgesics cause the contraction to be lessened making the woman less able to push the baby out. This can lead to inner bleeding and possible harm to the baby and mother. Oxytosin is the chemical compound that is released upon labour to stimulate the contractions, and if any opiod (anagesic) is received the levels of oxytosin are decreased. That is why in those cases if the soon to be mother shows sighs that she is incable of pushing or is in a state of mind that she is not aware of her environment and is dellusional …a c-section is needed otherwise she might die along with the baby.

    Thanks for the info ATTITW.

I am involved in pregnancy and fertility issues, so I know what your saying, but in this case Sun did not have an epidural. Unless I missed that? I probably did as you sound very sure of what your saying :)

When Sun first enters the hospital the doctor says he will give her something for the pain.
