In theory, the Casimir effect can be used to produce a locally mass-negative region of space-time, and suggested that negative effect could be used to stabilize a wormhole to allow faster than light travel.

— Andrelus

the orchid video

The producers have hinted at [since the very first time we saw the video, just about] clues placed within the orientation video

  1. Whispers can be heard that blend into the onscreen characters’ speech at the very beginning.

  2. Also at the beginning, Edgar Halowax (Marvin Candle?) mentions the unique propeties of the island creating a sort of “Casimir Effect” (see below)

  3. Three strange flashes throughout: A building (Hanso Foundation?), the image of Dharma co-founder, Gerald DeGroot, and finally the upside down bicycle at the barracks toward the end.

  4. The number 15 rabbit and the second one that arrives. Edgar Halowax exclaims, “Don’t let them near each other!”

  5. Edgar Halowax wearing a Swan station lab coat, while working at “The Orchid”.

There’s a few other things one could assume were hints, but these five are all I need to move forward.

the casimir effect { Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_effect }

I should start by saying that I am no Scientist - so I won’t bore you to death with science jargon - it isn’t important. Remember, this is a TV show. So many theorists here try to get hung around the scientific “FACTS”, meanwhile, television is fiction for a reason. I don’t pretend to fully understand the Casimir effect, but I will let you in on what I surmise is taking place due to the Casimir Effect.

In theory, the Casimir effect can be used to produce a locally mass-negative region of space-time, and suggested that negative effect could be used to stabilize a wormhole to allow faster than light travel. This is something I found highly interesting in my research.

wormholes { http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormhole }

To the best of my knowledge and again, without getting too scientific on everyone, in physics, a wormhole is a hypothetical topological feature of spacetime that is basically a ‘shortcut’ through space and time. Sure, we’ve seen time travel take place on the show, but I think there is a clue to something bigger in the Orchid Video. We seem to be a little hung up on time travel and constants. Here’s something else to ponder:

What if the Others are currently harnessing the power of wormholes - now that they have taken the Dharma Initiatives place on the island?

the whispers and sudden appearances of “the others”

I think the existence of wormholes explains this. They somehow managed to manipulate wormholes in order to travel freely from place to place. I’ll use Harper Stanhope as an explanation. In Season 4’s “The Other Woman”, Harper appears, alongside those pesky whispers, out of nowhere in the jungle to approach Juliet.

The whispers, I believe, are the result of the faster than light travel that would theoretically take place within a wormhole. In essence, time catching up with the traveller. This could be why we often hear voices from the past in the whispers, like what Frank Duckett told Sawyer after he was shot.

The Others using wormholes would explain a whole hell of a lot:

  1. Their ability to “appear” from out of no where, often accompanied by the whispers we hear so often.

  2. The appearance of Locke’s father. Ben mentioned a box to Locke. A box that from within, you could get anything you’ve ever dreamed of or wanted - the box could represent a wormhole. They could have opened up a wormhole to get Anthony Cooper to serve his purpose.

  3. I forget what episode, but when Ben showed Juliet footage of her sister, Rachel at a playground with what appeared to be here son, he told Richard to “hurry back”. How else would you “hurry back” from so far away. Of course this wouldn’t be an issue if you could travel faster than the speed of light.

  4. The Tunisian Polar Bear shown in Season 4’s “Confirmed Dead”. How could a polar bear (with a Dharma collar, by the way) travel from the island to the middle of the desert in Tunisia?

Stepping away from wormholes momentarily (I will return), something else I found peaked my interest.

nanotechnology - where The Casimir Effect’s applications are most likely to be found. (real world application)

Nanotechnology - refers broadly to a field of applied science and technology whose unifying theme is the control of matter on the atomic and molecular scale, generally 100 nanometers or smaller, and the fabrication of devices with critical dimensions that lie within that size range.

Could this explain the smoke monster? A creature being controlled on a molecular level? Good old smokie does seem to be comprised of volcanic ash. Tiny enough particles for you? See “nanorobotics” here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanorobotics

One of the hopes for application of nanotechnology comes in the form of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Utilizing the technology to treat tumors. Remember Ben telling Juliet he could “cure” her sister’s cancer? Maybe Ben just wanted Jack to perform the surgery on his tumor to test him and could really heal himself utilizing the technology the Dharma Initiative had perfected.

There is even speculation that nanorobots could slow or prevent the aging process. Tell me, how old does it seem Richard Alpert should be again? Being as how he looked exactly the same when Ben saw him as a child.

nanotechnology used to replicate anything { Ref: http://science.howstuffworks.com/nanotechnology.htm }

In the world of Star Trek, machines called replicators can replicate virtually everything. In the real world, scientists believe this to be a VERY real possibility. They call it “molecular manufacturing”. Here comes the wildest assumption yet:

{ A few theories on the web have posed this question recently }

What if the flight 815 that crashed in the Sunda Trench off the island was also the “real flight 815” that crashed on the island? What if a machine, created by the Dharma Initiative using the island’s properties and the existence of the Casimir Effect is responsible for not only the crash but for copying the plane and everything and everyone on it and sending it to the bottom of the Sunda Trench? This wild sci-fi assumption seems a far better hypothesis than someone being able to pull off a hoax of that scale. updated - I’m not buying Tom’s “evidence” in “Meet Kevin Johnson.

This is a quote from the how stuff works website I referenced above: “Eventually, we could be able to replicate anything, including diamonds, water and food. Famine could be eradicated by machines that fabricate foods to feed the hungry.”

Isn’t this the kind of technology many would like to get their hands on? This quite possibly could be what Charles Widmore is after in his search for the island. The Dharma Initiative perfected the science of nanotechnology enough to slow the aging process (i.e Richard) and replicated anything known to man, and Widmore wants in on this tremendous scientific innovation.

jacob and wormholes { i said I’d get back to wormholes at some point }

In theory a wormhole could be opened to pass through and travel faster than the speed of light. What if that wormhole were to be closed while a physical presence were traveling through it? What if this is why Jacob can either be seen and not heard, or heard and not seen.

This could very well be why Jacob hates technology; it’s the very thing that put him in the situation he is currently in.

15 + 15 = THIRTY?

Back to the Orchid Video and the number 15 rabbits. I think there is a very real possibility that whatever machine they speak of created another copy of the rabbit. Alternatively, what if all three incantations of the same person, Dr. Marvin Candle (Edgar Halowax, Mark Wickman) all existed thanks to the ability to replicate? After all, each version of Candle we’ve seen in the Orientation videos was slightly different.

Wormholes and nanotechnology = the hints within the Orchid Video?

I’m sure even with all of the information and explanations, I’m going to be attacked by a few because it all doesn’t “seem possible” which I’m so tired of the argument because Lost is fiction. With fiction, anything is possible.

A few other things I believe:

  1. I think that the Adam and Eve skeletons found in the caves in season one belong to Gerald DeGroot and his wife, the founders of the Dharma Initiative.

  2. I think Ben gave Michael and different coordinates than Daniel insisted Lapidus take because travelling to and from the island is different on both sides.

  3. I too think Ben’s son is Thomas.

  4. I’m almost positive that at some point Ben’s mother worked for Dharma.

  5. I think it’s either Sayid or Michael in the coffin

  6. I think Christian Shephard knew of the island and the research going on there.

  7. I STILL believe that Jacob is Jack’s grandfather. (He was on party of five - and the writers have said that names mean a lot on the show.)

  8. I’m positive that we’ve never seen a GHOST on the show.

      1. Namaste, Lost fans.

    WOW…………..can I get school credit for reading this?

    Although u put allot of effort into this, I find that u try to explain the entirety of the show which in itself is pretty damn hard to do, but I honor you for doin it.

    Can u add your personal recipe for home made Banana Bread as well?

    +1 for effort.

    Bravo…For such an important piece of the show the Orchid video seems to get forgotten. I also posted that the bodies were of the DeGroot’s and believe that the 815 in the Sundra Trench was real and fake at the same time and I believe Michael is in the coffin and so on and so on; you articulated all of it very well. Again, great post, took the words right out of my mouth.

    Andrelus nanotechnology has been de-bunked by the producers.

  4. dabiatchishere Mar 20, 2008 noon Comment: 4

    Andrelus: With all due respect “The Facts” as you refer to them, are relevant to theorizing. Otherwise, why don’t we all put up theories regarding the tv show “Married with Children”? A favourite of yours I am sure as it is laced with sarcasm, something which you have enjoyed inflicing on many of the newer posters on this site lately!

    This is all mumbo-jumbo as far as I am concerned. I know you are capable of much better work, and better manners, than you have shown recently!

  5. kavefish Mar 20, 2008 12:05 p.m. Comment: 5

    Time travel was debunked by the producers in the beginning, too. But that’s obviously happening in the show.

  6. DocBrown Mar 20, 2008 12:14 p.m. Comment: 6

    i really enjoyed reading this; obviously opinions will always differ but reading others idea’s adds to your own. i think the bodies in the cave will end up being two of our islanders, kate/jack, des/penny.

    your wormhole thinking is very close to how i’m thinking…i’ve been writing my theory for a couple of day’s attempting to wrap up what i think ‘lost’ is at the moment, and that’s a big task…u’ve done very well

    You are such a nasty bitch biatch…It’s mumbo-jumbo to you daBITCH because you are too stupid to understand it…stick to doing what you do best and that is turning guys into stone when you look at them.

    Lockekolikesboys….please stop insulting dabiatch. She of all people is one of the most kindest and fairest people on this site. Her posts are never as rude and plainly vulgar as yours, and the only reason why she would be saying what she says is because there is a reasonable point to it, where as you….there is no point to you…you might as well crawl back to your mums womb and hopefull go back to that endless void of nothing where you belong.

    You should not exist. ; )

    BRAVO!!!! +1.

    Well written, well thought out, well executed. Nicely done, Andrelus.

    Wow, I dont know why I never put two and two together (nobody said I was a smart girl) but you are right - whenever the others appear seemingly out of nowhere, there is that whispering going on. Maybe that is just the sound of the wormhole. I differ from your thought on this though - I think it is actual whispers, not “faster than light travel.” I think they are actual whispers from the past. Or maybe whispers of those who are trapped. If you remember when Hurley saw the cabin and heard the whispers the whispers were talking about him. “Who is that” and stuff. Cool idea!!

    I also like the bit about nanotechnology. That would explain why people get healed on this island. That is exactly one of the main intentions with nanotechnology. And that would go along with what the producers said, “everything can be explained scientifically” or something like that. Wow, I really like this.

    I know the producers poo poo’ed the idea of nanotechnology but I dont believe them anymore. They poo poo everything and look - we have time travel. But they said it wouldnt happen. I dont trust those F-ers. Love them but dont trust them for a second when it comes to Lost. Hehe.

    I also love the idea that Jacob is trapped in a wormhole. I always thought that Ben had trapped him somehow but never really had a good theory as to how or why. This may just be the explanation. One question regarding that, though. What is with the ash that is around the cabin? Just curious what your thoughts are on this.

    Wow, thank you for a really interesting read. I hope this goes in the “highest rated” category. There are holes but of course there are. You cant explain the whole show - nobody can.

    By the way, I do like you a LOT better when you speak intelligently and not so harshly on others and their opinions. :)

    I still think that the whispers and mysterious appearances are due to some type of Astral Projection. However, since I have never projected myself in that manner, nanotech could be the method of doing so.

  14. lockeko Mar 20, 2008 3:03 p.m. Comment: 14

    could you have nano-astral travel

  15. Connextion Mar 20, 2008 3:14 p.m. Comment: 15

    i enjoyed it, it can prettymuch explain everything!

    like what was posted earlier, producers did debunk nanobots being apart of the show, but if it is true that they said the same about timetravel,then things may have changed! +1 from me defo :)

    Although, next time try to condense this for us, please. TOO LONG. But, still pretty interesting.

  19. ravenontheleft Mar 21, 2008 12:17 p.m. Comment: 19

    Let me begin by saying that your theory just blew my mind. I mean I almost feel like you’ve ruined the final episode for me. Almost.

    I think you are 99.9% right about all of your speculation on here. I had googled the casmir effect when I first saw the orchid video and even the wikipedia article was way over my head. But your explanation of it is great and very accessable. The idea that the Others are manipulating worm holes is certain (now) in my mind. It explains nearly every weird thing on the island with science, which is something the creators have always been ademet about.

    The only thing I don’t really think is true is your idea that Jacob is trapped in a worm hole by Ben. It doesn’t really fit with how Ben is constantly visiting him and just doesn’t really seem likely to me considering all we’ve seen in relation to Jacob. Oh and the other thing that I don’t agree with (but I’m well aware that at the time you wrote this, the latest episode hadn’t aired) is that the plane is real. We now know it was Windmore that faked it.

    I am absolutely stunned that you only have a +4. This is definitly the best theory on the site and I will be linking to it for sure and I think you are going to be able to post a big fat “I TOLD YOU SO!!” theory after the final episode.

    +1 (million)

  21. Katesbabydaddy Mar 21, 2008 3:23 p.m. Comment: 21

    food drops were an interesting hang-up actually. Remember that nobody ever saw a food drop, heard any planes or Choppers, its like the food just appeared (ooohhhh wormhole!) Food drops now make sense….I think.

  23. Andrelus Mar 23, 2008 3:27 p.m. Comment: 23

    Nice, Katesbabydaddy. I hadn’t even thought about that with the food drops.

  24. MidnightDraven Apr 14, 2008 9:45 a.m. Comment: 24

    When the food drop arrived, Locke was locked (no pun intended) in the hatch. Presumbly, this is what happened everytime a food drop happened. Before the survivors were landed on the island, it could have been possible that a plane or chopper was dropping the food. In theory of wormholes, just because something has a parachute doesnt mean it has to be dropped by something that is flying. True, the wormhole may drop the palate of food from above the ground, and need the parachute in order to land safely, a wormhole would make no noise, unlike a plane. The lockdowns are to ensure that the food is dropped and the people assume its dropped from a plane, i.e leading to the assumption that somewhere off island (mainland) is someone coordinating things. That there is contact to the “outside world” and they aren’t stuck on an island that only those on the island know about!
