In the episode, where Clair has flashbacks her boyfriend whom is an artist, is seen with artwork in background…..The unfinished artwork is that of the picture that Widmore has in his office!!!!!!!!!!!!! How the heck is he related any ideas shoot them out there……

Also, could he be the one being held captive?…(It looks like Desmond)

Just warning you before you get jumped on by the hyenas that this has been discussed a lot before! I think it’s really interesting & there must be some connection but I don’t buy into the theory discussed on here before that Thomas is Ben’s son - they don’t look that alike to me. The artwork is v interesting though - it’s in Ben’s hatch I believe too…
Figured out a long time ago . . .
+1 for effort!
omg! i just checked out your link and had forgotten what Thomas looked like… Does he have an uncanny resemblence to Ben? Hmmm…
When was Desmond in Widmore’s office? wasn’t it prior to Claire dating Thomas? Desmond’s meeting with Widmore would have taken place between 1996 and 2000. The painting was not created and displayed in Thomas’s studio until 2004….this is another interesting time shift scenario…hmm…I cant fingure out the connection though. Somehow the painting was created in 2004, yet went back in time to 2000! If what someone said about the painting also appearing in Ben’s hatch is true, this proves a very interesting Widmore-Ben link. This could prove that Ben (or someone connected with him on the outside) acquired the painting in 2004, had it brought to his place on the Island and later Widmore may have actually come to the Island somehow and taken the painting with him when he left….BUT when Widmore leaves he time shifts to 2000 with the painting. Still a little foggy about it, but this could be a VERY interesting connection between Ben and Widmore and proves that Widmore has been to the Island and knows its powers.
What are these powers everyone talks about?? The fact that there is a giant magnet somewhere in the island?? lol Anywho just an observation, Thomas starred in the episode “Raised by An-other”, coincidence or fate?? He does look a lot like Ben. I cant wait to find out how everyone is related, it’s probably so so simple! +1 Pal
What if the painting is someone’s constant…like Widmore?
I’m not so keen on this ide but it could explain the painting turning up in lots of places - if someone needs it to remain sane.
Alternatively, it could just be the prop department running out of set decoration and reusing pieces to fill space…
+1 For bringing to my attention that business with Thomas’ painting being in Widmore’s office. I never knew about that!
The timelines definitely put this at a point, however, where Desmond (and the painting) was in the office long before Thomas would ever paint the picture! So, like Benhayes suggested, this points more towards a prop department error for me.
Noone agrees with my theory that Widmore went to the Island, took the painting back in time with him to 2000?
When this issue was raised a long time ago, the PTB said that one of the producers knocked up a few paintings for these scenes and that was their only connection.
I am not sure how much I believe what they say though.
It could be just an “easter egg”, with no real relevance other than to catch the eyes of loyal fans.
It’s also possible that he just bought the artwork to decorate the office, and it is therefore a coincidence. (Still, a sort of Easter Egg).
Either way though, I have trouble believing that a man who drinks Brandy worth more than Desmond earns in a year, would hang a painting done by an unknown starving artist.
