After reading the wonderful ideas of Jukin http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2008/mar/17/jins-grave-has-be-fake/ I felt compelled to further explore Michael appearance on the Freighter.

How could it possibly come to pass that Michael is now ‘under cover’ and quietly working on the freighter as a trusted crew member.

Last we saw of Michael he and Walt were free and motoring off into the middle of the Pacific on a short range Tugboat. I sure hope Ben supplied that boat with plenty of fuel!!! The only other possibliity is that land is somewhere nearby. So if Ben sent Michael and Walt out into the Pacific with a heading of 325degrees and assuming they did reach land what in the world would compel Michael to enlist on the aforementioned Freighter. Why then wouldnt they simply get to freedom and tell the whole world about what has happened to the passengers of Flight 815????

If we follow this line of reasoning only one real possibility lends itself any real credence. Ben has setup Michael and has regained possesion of Walt. Bens remaining crew is watching over Walt at the Temple. This would explain the appearance of Walt to Locke in his moment of utter dispair in the deathpit. Walt seemingly has the ability to ‘show up’ or appear where he should not be. We know this by the questioning of Michael by Mrs.Klugh in the fake ‘Others’ village a while back.

If Ben does have possesion of Walt, and he has put Michael on the boat as a spy/sabetour wouldn’t it make sense that Michael end up as one of the Ocenic Six? If so could he in fact be so dispondent that he cannot return to save Walt so much so the he would kill himself ? And Ultimately be the man in the coffin? The storyline would lend itself to believability, and would explain both Kates reaction to the coffin as well as Jack’s behavior and comments(becoming dispondent and attempting suicide) as seen in the flash forwards.

It just seems like the most logical playout and it would also give merit to the idea that Ben would in fact ‘do whatever it takes’ to save the island.

Wow Thardie, Way to hit it right out of the park!! I love it and think you are quite likely 100% right with those observations. It does make perfect sense about how Michael would be on “the freighter”, and why he agrees to be Ben’s man on the boat!

Wish I could give this one a humongous size +++++ in lieu +1 will have to do.

Thanks Dab. You know the reappearance of Michael on the last episode seemed so uneventful, with all of the secrecy surrounding the show, Yet the Huge announcement so long ago that Michael would be back, his reappearance seemed very anti-climatic, Also like it were staged. Something big is going to happen to the Michael character if I had my guess. It just seems like his return will have some big impact further down the road. At least that is what I think.

Maybe upon his return to civilization without Walt he’ll simply lose it. Go crazy or insane or maybe postal!

Thardie, It will be interesting to see how this plays out in a few more episodes. I am really anxious to see what happens since you have raised some good issues here. Love the mind juice!

My only reservation is that Michael acting on behalf of Ben/The Others because of Walt has already been done. (I agree, however, that it seems like the most likely reason why Michael would persist.)

Perhaps it might be his way of making up for what he did; rescuing the people he left behind. I mean, he probably would know not to expect a warm welcome and smiles and hugs, but it’s better than just murdering a couple of people and then disappearing into the sunset. If only for his own conscience, if nothing else.

That is a very interesting point AC. If we follow that line of thinking, that he is doing it to clear his conscience, what then did he do with Walt. Has he left him in the care of others (Not those Others, but loved ones) I know that personal redemption is the underlying theme but would Michael be willing to leave Walt, just to clear his conscience? I dont know if that is feasible, but it is certainly another possibility for sure.

I don’t think Walt is with the others. I think Walt was allowed (by Ben) to leave the Island under the deal that Michael became the spy on the freighter. Michael’s only hope of seeing Walt again is to play out his spy role until Ben sees fit to let him go. As to Michael grieving and in the coffin - no! Too easy. Why bother bringing him back for such a straightforward and dull end.

Actually I like both the ideas of Walt at the Temple or Walt being allowed to leave—although in the latter case you’d have to imagine that somehow Ben could show Michael that he had the reach off the island to hurt Walt if Michael didn’t follow orders.

Much as I dislike the idea of Michael being Ben’s man on the boat, (I’d just like a big surprise on that) the evidence so far does seem to support it. But given that we saw Walt leave with Michael, I’d be inclined to think Walt is on the boat too. Given the way he attracts things, he might be locked up somewhere, like “the noisy” part of the freighter. I agree he’s likely one of the 6, and likely the one in hte coffin.

+1 Tharde, makes perfect sense to me!

Great theory. I like the notion of Ben being back in control of Michael. If Mike is one of the six, I guess we get back to him being in coffin. I thought the obit listed a teenage son as a survivor. If Mike is in the six, then the cover story has to be that Walt did not survive the crash. So, he wouldn’t be listed as one of Mike’s survivors.

I love the idea here….were def on the right track. But i believe that Walt didnt want to leave the island. I think he likes it there. It IS a magical place right? And the kid has an imagination, right? Well then, this island would rock, if I was a kid on it.

But, if im wrong on the whole walt-loves-the-island thing. I think its a good theory that walt is being held at the temple. And also, i dont think that we’ve seen the last of Bens spy’s. Afterall, Ben said he had a spy on the boat, right? Well he would NEVER lie to us, right….?!? (lol)

We’re missing one thing here. I don’t understand how Michael can co-exist on the freighter without being linked to flight 815. What I mean is, I would think that the people on the freighter have a list of the flight 815 passengers. I remember Frank asking Juliette who she was earlier this season and recognizing right away that she wasn’t on flight 815. He recognized the name wasn’t on the list, but it was only after looking at her strangely, like he knew he hadn’t seen her face on the flight list. I know Michael gave them a fake name, but wouldn’t the captain or a select few crew members have pictures of the victoms of flight 815? I guess, for the purpose of suspense etc., the writers must be overlooking that problem.
