Why was Michael flying to Los Angeles instead of back home to New York?

— shoegirl927

Why was Michael flying to LA instead of back home to New York? On Lostpedia it says this- Brian tracked down Michael in New York, and told him that they had moved to Australia and whilst there, Susan had died of a “blood disorder”. Brian arrived in New York the day after Susan’s death. He pleaded with Michael to take custody of Walt once more, and gave him tickets for the flight to Sydney and back, plus extra money for travel expenses. Brian had never wanted to be a father, and had only adopted Walt to appease Susan. Brian also admitted that was afraid of Walt, saying: “There’s something about him. Sometimes, when he’s around, things happen. He’s different somehow.” (“Special”)

Together, they boarded Oceanic Flight 815, with Michael unsure if he could handle having a son in his life. Before he boarded the plane, he called his mom, expressed his insecurity, and asked her to take care of Walt. Her ultimate answer was irrelevant, for the plane crashed, making it impossible for her to watch over Walt. (“Exodus, Part 2”)

Was he going to LA to drop off Walt to his mom? Cuz Michael lived in New York…?

I don’t know the flight paths from Australia to America. the pacific ocean is a pretty big strech of ocean, i do not think there are direct flights from Sydney to New York because of the length. I think Michael flew to LA then was going to hop on a plane from LA to New York.

I flew to Australia twice from Boston and my connections were LAX. It was probably just a layover.
