To follow-up on the fine posting by dclostie and the comments in that post,

The Freighter folks and their sponsors want Ben alive. He is no good to them dead so there is no reason to disable the gas plant if they just want him out of the picture. I do not see them wanting to save the Losties, there is no benefit in it for them (and finding survivors of flight 815 just complicates their mission) so if they die then its just one less headache for Widmore’s team.

Since they could take the island by just wearing gas masks, thus nullifying the threat of the poisous gas, that gas would only be effective as a final play by Ben to keep him and his people out of the hands of the Freightors. Think Jim Jones giving his poison Kool-aid to his followers.

Ben has been on the island for a long time and knows many secrets about it. Any information he or his people possess would be invaluable to the relative newcomers like the freighter people so capturing and questioning the “Others” would be a top priority.

The gas staion would be disabled first because team Widmore knows that it is a lot easier to gas your unsuspecting followers than it is to convince each and every one of them to take their own lives to keep the island’s secrets safe.

And for Ben to convince this people to kill themselves, since he was already falling out of favor among the others, would be one hell of a feat to pull off.

you are either exaclty correct, or they weren’t disabling the gas at all. What if they were actually arming it, like Juliet thought when she arrived.
