As I was watching Season 1 again over on ABC.COM, something occured to me.

This may have been mentioned before, and if so, I apologize.

But the Australian man who first heard the “numbers” over the long range radio surveillance used them to guess the number of beans in a huge jar.

So I wrote down what that number would be:

4,815,162, 342

Knowing that one of the proposed “cures” for the Valenzetti Doomsday equation is to kill of 30% of the world’s population, I found a website that listed the date/year when the world’ s population equaled that number. As best as I can determine, that would have been around May 17, 1984.

1984 has particular significance because it’s the title of a fairly scary book about totalitarian world domination.

Of course, the world’s population today far exceeds that number, more than 6 billion. However i wonder if there is something to it, that back in the early 70’s it was thought by Valenzetti that once the world’s population achieved that number, about 4.8 billion, that it would self-destruct. And perhaps the measures put into place by the Dharma Initiative prevented that collapse?

According to the back of the blast door in the Swan (Hatch), the shutdown date of the stations was on 28th October 1984. This is regarded as a potential date for the ‘purge’. Let us suppose that your theory is correct - maybe once the population reaches this number then the Valenzetti equation cannot be altered i.e. the Dharma initiative failed. Maybe the purge has something to do with this! Once that date had passed, maybe all that was important was to ‘isolate’ the island from the impending doom that was forecast.

I kinda like this. What if 4815162342 is the number that will be left of the population after 30% have been killed. That would mean that the population would need to reach 6878803345 which would be some time in the not too distant future.

    Nice.

    Great additional thought, Lojozz.

That’s one hell of a lot of beans! They must have calculated by weight how many there were because they definitely didn’t count them.

I’ve said this before but the Lotto must have been the origin of the numbers because no-one could fix that. Coincidence / synchronicity won’t do as an explanation. So the other occurences must be due to the Lotto numbers being passed back during time-shifting probably for Hurley’s benefit.

I like this, it started out like it was going to be super confusing but its actually pretty simple and makes pretty good sense. good job. plus uno

Yes, Lojozz, I like your corollary. I had played around with various numbers, such as what 70% of current world population is (less than 4815162342), and I was looking at when the world’s population would be 130% of 4815162342… using that website. But I forget what I found, lol.

The website, by the way, uses an algorithm to estimate past and future population. Don’t think Valenzetti had anything to do with it ;-)

According to the world population estimation website, on or about January 23, 2009, the earth’s population will reach a point where if 30% were eliminated, the remainding survivors would number approximately 4,815,162,342.

    Mark your calendars :-)

Well, I went to that population site and i found (with a little maths) that the exact time that world population was 4.815.162.342 was : May 17th 1984 05:03 AM and 16 seconds. And if you turn the hours/minutes/seconds thing around, you get March 16th 2005, wich is very close since they just passed christmas 2004. Coincidince or is something gonna happen?
