This Widmore as a bad guy may be a mind game on the part of the writers
If someone has posted something similar please forgive a repeat. Though I don’t think it is very likely, what if Charles Widmore is not the monster that we have been led to believe so far. Sure, he isn’t a real nice guy. He has treated Desmond like dirt, manipulates people and takes actions that hurt others and damage lives, but many corporate biggies do the same. His reaction to Desmond, though not what we may do, is not all that hard to understand when you remember that he is a man trying to protect his daughter from someone who he considers innappropriate for his little girl. He is mega-wealthy and people with that kind of power and affluence tend to be a bit harsh and paranoid…if they weren’t they wouldn’t have become that powerful to begin with.
But what if he has had a change of heart, what if Penny has won him over and he is now working to find Desmond? What if he knows that Ben is involved with the island and that he is a threat to Desmond and, therefore, his daughter’s happiness? He does seem to be sending a kind of “message” to (possibly) Ben in the video.
In addition, what would be his reaction if he was part of the original Dharma Initiative funding and saw his efforts on their behalf wasted when Dharma lost control of the island. I think that may not have set well with a,driven, type-A personality like Widmore and he might be involved in an effort to take back the island. He may see it as an opportunity to recoup his original investment in Dharma or it may be a simple “I don’t like to loose” ego-thing.
I know this is all a bit unlikely and I’m not convinced of the probabily of this myself but I have learned over the last few years (as we all have) that things are not usually as they appear to be on our favorite mind-bending show.
Charles Widmore as a good guy would be as shocking a revelation as just about anything, especially if he was one of the ones trying to protect the Island (very unlikely but…)
Do the “freightors” work for Widmore? Is he the “Economist?” Is Widmore one of the bad guys? The answers to these questions are porbably yes if you look at the current evidence. Is it possible that he is a good guy? Is it possible that he is working aginst others trying to take back control of the island such as the Original Dharma or perhaps Paik Heavy Industries are? Again, the answers to these questions may be yes as well.
Do I trust the writers of Lost to give me straight answers and do the obvious?
Sure I do…about as much as I would trust Sawyer in a busines deal :)
p.s.
I have only been on this site for about 2 weeks but thanks to everyone for being so welcoming and supportive in my ramblings…there are great bunch of people here and it is very, very refreshing to find.

Why do people keep implicating PAIK Industries when we haven’t seen the company’s name on anything or Mr. Paik anywhere in recent memory?
Paik industries…not nice people and, if I’m not mistaken, has been asociated with Alvar Hano and/or Dharma in some regard either through a Lost-approved website or some ABC-related material.
Also just a speculation on my part as very little that is seen in Lost is not interconnected or related to the bigger picture in some way, even if that connection is not immediately obvious.
agree. Widmore will prove to be on the right side of things. If there’s a battle line between ben and CW as Charlotte said, then who is on the side of good? Ben is a mass murderer. CW is tough but there is no evidence he is a killer.
I like the idea of Penny and Charles Widmore working together.
Charles Widmore auctioned the log book of the Black Rock. I suppose it says something about magnetic interferences before the boat got lost.
Penny and he talked about that and thats why she paid the two scientist who were looking for magnetic interferences at the pole.
This looks like she and her father are working together to find the island.
But they are surely not working together to find Desmond.
