Who is the man on the boat? Well here are my final candidates with the most likely listed first and least likely listed last. On some of these I’m kinda’ being silly but on others I am completely serious.

People who are or could be alive:
michael
Yes, the obvious choice and on Lost the obvious is not always the best choice. But remember, Charles Widmore was thought by most fans to be the man responsible for the freighter and episode-6 seems to confirm this so maybe the obvious is correct. Unless Widmore is not the man behind the freighter and Ben is making it all up…perhaps he just showed Locke a video of Widmore firing an employee. Seeing how sweetly he treated Desmond that my not be too far from the truth :)
WALT
If it isn’t Michael it could be Walt. Walt would be helping Ben so that Ben will help Walt’s dad. Perhaps they were separated and working for Ben is the condition for them to be reunited. This motivation works for both Walt and Michael.
richard alpert
Didn’t see that one coming, did ya? Why not. We haven’t seen him for a while and he has been shown off the island. If Widmore doesn’t know of his involvement with Ben he would be a great choice. Intelligent, likeable, smooth talker and such a youthful looking man.
HELEN
Why not, we really don’t know that much about her. Maybe she went all commando and is searching for Locke.
hurley’s dad
I know, Cheech to the rescue, its a hard pill to swallow.
claire’s psychic friend
You know, the guy in Australia who told Claire she should give up her baby for adoption
desmond’s physicist friend in the uk
Could have been put up to it by Penny, but that would hardly knock Locke’s socks off (try saying that three times fast)
juliette’s sister
kate’s dad
nadia (sayid’s girl)
SAYID
Not possible as he was not on the boat
People who are or assumed to be dead or somewhere in between!
This is tough because unless people can come back from the dead on LOST, you’re not gonna get much info out of them.
jacob….hey yeah…jacob
Either in the non-corporeal form or in the body of a dead person. The following are candidates for that: christian sheppard, charlie, patchy, mr eko’s brother yemi
Or Jacob sharing a living person’s body: walt, michael
the smoke monster
(Bet you REALLY didn’t see that one coming :)
Let’s see, if the vision that Mr. Eko saw of his brother was actually the smoke monster taking human form as is widely speculated by fans, it would be a perfect choice. seemingly indestructible, incredibly powerful and it’s purpose, after all, is to protect the island. But this would assume that Ben either has the ability to control it or at least communicate with it.
The following dead people are listed just because they would have had the time to get to the freighter and because it is, after all, Lost that we are talking about
patchy, charlie, locke’s daddy, christian sheppard, libby, boone, mr. eko, yemi, anna lucia , nikki and paulo (i can’t believe i wrote those two names) and arzt (at least part of him)
And the least likely candidate for being Ben’s man on the boat…
a polar bear

you forgot kelvin :). that was my latest guess anyway seeing as he knew both sayid and desmond pretty well. the only thing throwing me off is that ben asked locke to sit down and “get ready” for his answer. all in all, it’s probably mikey :/
I love that the little twist could be Walt…that would definitely make me happier than it being Michael. Perhaps while the Others had Walt they were “priming” him for just this scenario. I think it could work.
And some of the other suggestions- LOL funny- :-)
My personal thoughts are that it is Walt. Here’s why: Michael was hit by a car years ago and was hospitalized for a long time (high and frequent levels of radiation in the hospital) so therefore I think Michael may have died from the ‘side effects’. This leaves Walt, obviously Walt is a child, a scared child at that, if Ben was able to communicate with Walt and get him to work for him in exchange for safety I am sure that Walt would have agreed. When he was on the island everyone was mostly fighting with his dad, when Ben came along he was the first one to actually work with Michael and help them get off the island. Walt probably trust Ben, especially if Michael is dead. I realize that I am probably completely wrong but hey, its just a though.
On a side note, when Ben said that Locke had better sit down my first thought was Nikki and Paulo too…boy would that be disappointing!
+1
It’s Naomi! Who else would Locke be more familiar with than the woman he supposedly killed? and who else would be a better spy for Ben?
Maybe it’s the rest of that big 4-toed dude, hopping around the decks of the ship on one foot.
I love how this post just names everyone we have ever met on the show! Haha. So, no matter who it is, you can say, “I told you so!” +1 for creating a theory that can’t be wrong!
I said this in another theory post but it can’t hurt to put in here. I think Micheal is to easy of a choice and I think Charlie is the man on the boat. Here’s the thing, they have been very vague about if Charlie is actually dead both on the show and the producers when they do interviews. For example, Desmond shaking his head to hurley saying “sorry brotha” rather than Charlie didn’t make it or something along those lines. We know that Charlie would do anything to save Claire and if he were made to believe by Ben or the others that working for them on the boat would help (and he knows the boat people are not Penny’s and therefore could be bad). Also when Ben said he would say who the man on the boat was he said you better sit down and it was someone familiar to him. Micheal wouldn’t be such a huge shock since he has betrayed them in the past but Charlie would be really shocking
I think it is Michael, here is why: It confirmed that Michael’s actor has signed on to the full season getting star billing. Therefore he will be the guy… they dont pay you for nothing… Walt has not been signed on for this type of deal, but no doubt he will show up in flashbacks etc.
OOPS! I left out Vincent…and Trisha Tanaka and Skeletor and Frogurt and Tommy Chong and Connie Chung and the Dharma oat bars…
But I think its Vincent…Yeah, Vincent
What if it’s Locke’s dad? What if Sawyer didn’t actually kill him?
Yeah, on second though, it’s gotta be Frogurt.
