BEN……The newspaper says that it is John Lantham…..We know how these creators of lost like to use famous mathematicians and philosphers well…John/ Jeremy Bentham was a famous philospher…..The creators took the BEN out and took out the LAN…..
Also did anyone notice that the funeral parlors name Hoffs/Drawler was an anagram for Flash Forward..And does the book lying next to the coffin look like Bens Dairy or is that just me reading too much into this stuff…I love this show!!!

The name of the funeral parlor meaning “flash forward” was already pointed out by the producers during the expanded version of the episode. I like how you matched up BEN and bentham though. If it is Ben, I think we will get greater hints in future episodes, but this is a good observation. +1.
The Ben Bentham comparison is interesting. Bentham devised the Panopticon, a prison that allows the guard to see all prisoners at once without their knowledge. The fear that they are being watched regulates their behaviour.
Ben has a keen sense to know what every survivor is up to both in terms of activities and subconscience fears / thoughts. Sometimes he does this through overt technologies (cameras) but I am beginning to get a sense he can enter their minds (ESP?).
I’ve always thought that Ben was in the coffin. You’re just helping make my guess more concrete so thanks! I think that the Smoke Monster is an extension of Ben’s mind/ESP power…. B/c I think he sent that lady who I think we will find out is dead (b/c that’s all the smoke monster protrays) and that Ben keeps the dead in his memory to use against people he doesn’t like. Just a thought.
Welcome to the site, lostinthewoods! Very creative thinking on your theory earns you a +1. I don’t know who is in the casket, but I like the way you can write a theory. :-)
I like that you tied John/ Jeremy Bentham to Ben, I agree that is interesting…
BUT (hate to be the pessimist here) why would Jack be so upset if Ben died? Thats my only concern with the theory. What possibly ties Jack and Ben that closely that Jack would even show up to his funeral?
May be the fact that Jack wanted to get back to the island so badly and he thought Ben knew the way, once Ben died Jack came to the realization that he can “never go back”?
Good point Twilight. I think Ben can easily move to where he wants in the world via his “magic box”. Maybe the cancer came back or he was killed while off the island. With Ben dead Jack knows that is one less way he can get back to the island either to escape this world or help his friends.
However it is also possible that Jack was upset that Ben died because Ben was protecting / helping his freinds in some way (with the help of Sayid of course). With Ben gone the fate of the survivors are now in Charles Widmore’s hands.
Of course the simplest explaination is that Jack was being emotional and seeing Ben dead brought back many memories of the island and his freinds.
if this does turn out to be true then obviously ben has worked up the stories they are telling everyone and has given himself a alias to them so they can contact him off the island for whatever reasons. How else would jack, halfway sauced up, just glance at the newspaper and catch John Lantham so quickly.
We also know that Ben uses multiple aliases as evidenced by the passports in his barracks stash.
Twilight that is exactley why I think jack is so upset…because he realizes he can never get back (or thinks he cant)….People on this site are so damn smart and creative!!!!! I love it…
