The number Penny’s dad held up at the auction, “755”.

Did anyone else notice that this number is commonly used to describe the permissions of a file held on a computer?

http://www.elated.com/articles/understanding-permissions/

I wonder if this gives us a clue to the ‘laws’ of time travel in Lost? i.e. You can ‘read’ but not ‘write’ - your actions will not be ‘written’?

Any opinions? Just saw the number and it was immediately familiar to me.

I think you might be grasping.

I was wondering what that number meant as well. I couldn’t think of anything and I didn’t read any posts on it so I just assumed it was just a random number (which is rarely the case when it comes to Lost). I’m not completely sold on the “permissions” theory. Nice try though.

Yes! These numbers are familiar to me to, its nice to see another linux nerd around here.

I knew I recognised them but I never put 2 and 2 together.

as 755 is usually a default permission dished out to all new files on a linux system, it means that the owner can write, read and execute, do you think that is something to do with it?

The island might have a writer, or a person completely in control of the island.

Well just a thought, nice find though.

Weird in itself, Im not a computer geek so I know little of this little Linux spoof. I find it hard to grasp that Wildmoore is manipulating the Island with a Linux program. I understand that it may only be symbolic to him trying to control it like he might have done with thrusting Desmond in the Island (every action has a reaction)…otherwise Bob’s Your Uncle Mate.

When I think about it, maybe thats what it signifies..Windmoore is the gatekeeper to the Islands secrets. We know that he is awfully rich, but maybe his past ancestors who multiplied his current capital were involved with slavetrading and by some chance one of these boats were lost. His philatropist ancestors would have been aware exactly where it dissapeared and that history would have passed on to Mr. Windmoore. Then in the future by some freak occurence the book reapers after all probability it should have dissapeared amond the waves and clearly been in worst shape then it actually is. Oh well..too much to think about.

Well, it was just an observation and it could well be that it’s not significant at all and just a coincidence!

My theory is that 755 is a clue to the nature of time travel in Lost - i.e. you can ‘view’ (for want of a better word) time but not alter it.

Highly unlikely that I’m correct but just thought I’d throw it out there.

I think I’ve already proposed a theory here that the entire Island is one big computer game, with the characters being avatars of real people. Ben Linus (The creator of Linux is also named Linus, isn’t he?) being the master programmer who is in ultimate control of all that happens.

It’s been a while since I played with Linux/Unix, but 755 would give Widmore more than average powers, but not the “super” user powers that Linus, in control of the ROOT, would have.

Then we have ABC/Disney/Comus coming out with an actual LOST video game

    According to Lostpedia:

Faraday says that while Desmond was in a catatonic state in his room at Oxford, 75 minutes had passed. Desmond perceived the same amount of time as 5 minutes. The ratio of 75:5 is equivalent to 15:1.

    and then later says:

At the auction, Widmore is bidder number 755, the same numbers as the time ratio

Therefore the 755 on Mr. Widmore’s auction paddle is both a reference to the Numbers (15) and to the parameters of the “time flash” disease.

On a different thought wouldn’t be cool if the time ratio discrepancies suffered by those with the time flash disease (which according to Minkowski get progressively shorter) progressed so that the time ratios would be 42:1, 23:1, 16:1, 15:1, 8:1, 4:1, Death
