I believe a certain song played towards the end of the Season Finale of Season 4 gives us a hint as to what is coming up next for Jack.

You don’t need to go much further then here ( http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Music ) to see the role music plays on the show and how it describes a character (current, past, present, or any characteristics the character(s) involved may have) and possible motives.

Jacks Flashforwards are particularly interesting. Last year, in through the looking glass, when Jack is about to go into the memorial at the funeral home, we hear scentless apprentice by Nirvana. This song should have helped us realize (earlier on) who was in the coffin, and why. Here’s my theory on that (because hindsignt is always 20/20 :) :

The song Scentless Apprentice gives us two major clues:

  1. We can conclude from the songs title that Jack is a “scentless apprentice” (or maybe the man in the coffin is). Meaning he doesn’t know but he is the apprentice to whatever the heck is going on.

  2. A little deeper we look, and we find out Cobain wrote Scentless Apprentice about the book the perfume by Patrick Süskind. The main character “grenouille” (French for “frog”) is an unwanted Parisian orphan who, having no personal scent, is rejected by others because they are disturbed by his lack of odor. He has an extraordinary power to discern odours, and comes to loathe the scent of other people. He becomes apprenticed to a tanner at the age of eight, and after work explores the city. One day he smells a divine scent and follows it, and is shocked to find that the source of this beautiful scent is a young woman. He kills her to get a better smell of her scent, then he leaves. He dedicates his life to discovering the perfect scent. (thank you wikipedia :) … you can learn more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Parfum)

-OK, so take away all of the odor stuff, but compare it sybolically to John Locke….and BAM, you have your person in the coffin. Now, this could be coincidence and what not, but I do think the producers gave us the CLUE right there. At very least we should have thought when in Season 4 they confirm john locke is taking over, that the person in the coffin would be John Locke….since we have the scentless apprentice deal.

Now, on too the season 4 Finale….we get the wonderful song (yes, I’m a huge Pixies fan) gouge away. This song is playing, yet again, when we see Jack about to enter the ole memorial house to see the mystery man in the COFFIN (whom we know now is John Locke). In the room, we also find good ole BEN…who has some “IDEAS” on how to get back to the island. Anyways, here is some background to the song gouge away-

-Gouge Away is about the biblical story of Samson and Delilah. Like our wonderful producers/powers that be for LOST, Frank Black (singer of Pixies) was fascinated with biblical tales.

-The story of Samson and Delilah basically boils down to this:

Samson had incredible powers. He was constentantly upset/against the philistines. The philistines grew so jelous of Samson’s powers, that they approached a girl that Samson liked. Her name was Delilah. They offered Delilah a whole bunch of money to figure out what Samson’s power was. At first Delilah says no, but then she goes on and thinks of all the wonderful money she will get and have, and desides to do it. Samson then decides to tell her that it has to do with being tied up a certain way. Delilah then sneaks out and tells the philistines what the secret to Samson’s powers were. They tell delilah to tie him up and they will attack. Delilah does and then the philistines arrive. However, Samson is able to easily break out of them. After that, Delilah kept getting sadder and sadder to try and find a way for Sampson. Finally after long enough NAgging, Sampson told Delilah if you leave me alone I will tell you. Delilah went running back to the Philistines and said for sure she had the answer now and they can attack. It has to do with his hair.

Anyways, from then on Sampson was caught, but God wasn’t done with him yet and had his hair continue to grow back. He had his eyes gouged out, etc….Anyways, this is the act GOD used to free the israelites.

OK, so with that being the story, there are tons of theories that I think lead to events that will happen next season, until we get yet another great 90’s song to figure out what happens in Season 6.

Specifially I think we can take three things from the Samson and Delilah story:

  1. Samson freed the slaves by having a power given to him by god -This is Jack, and he will free the people on the island
  2. He will be conned into the enemies hands by a girl he loves -This is Kate, she will work to CON Jack into the enemies hands
  3. Jack in fact has a power given to him by the island…this power is great, and he is keeping it a secret.

Anyways, I will probably expand on this later, but I think there is something to this.

Nice observations. Not sure how Locke relates to the perfume dude, care to explain bit clearer? Gonna give you a plus one for 2 reasons - good music taste, and the phrase “a whole bunch of money”. i love whole bunches of stuff.
