Moving the Island “resets” everything to a prior condition.
— cenoura
Since Ben knows exactly what to do in order to move the Island, we are led to believe that it is not the first time the Island was moved. Considering this, I found out that something does not add up.
If the island has been moved before, why is the Vault (that chamber in the Orchid where time travel happens, remember?) still intact? I mean, Ben stuffs it up with metallic objects to blow it up and make that hole. But if the Island had been moved before, why isn’t there a hole already? What I think is that when moving the Island, everything “resets” to some prior condition. What I mean is that the Island and everything on it travels back to time, so for example the Vault goes back to its originary condition (not broken). And also the Swan would be up and running again. That is also why moving the Island makes it undetectable again: it appeared that after the EM explosion, it was possible to see and go to the Island. By resetting the Swan and the EM field, everything will be as it were before. Althought while writing this, an easier explanation came up to my mind: maybe the Island was last moved before the Dharma Initiative had built the Orchid. This is a much more logical explanation but I actually like the first one better. I mean, I’d like to see the Swan again in season 5. After all, we never heard of the Blast Door Map again, and I believe it should play a more important role. I remember how shocked I was when I saw it the first time! Anyways, I wanted to share this, let me know what you think about it.

I think it’s much more likely that Dharma built the station after the last time the island was moved - remember, it is “a measure of last resort” according to Ben, and may have more (physical, psychological, environmental) consequences than just the exile of the person “moving” the island.
Read my (recently posted) theory about moving the island - I’m thinking the last probable time that the island was moved was in the 1800’s when the island may have appeared right underneath the Black Rock slave ship.
Yeah, I think you arrived at a best answer towards the end of your post. (The resetting idea is just too crazy for me. What’s to stop the Island resetting to a state where the likes of Locke didn’t exist on it, for example?)
Very good theory good observation on the vault, i never noticed that. +1
How did Ben know that sticking all the metal in the machine would blow a hole in it?
