I have been struggling with the fact Locke was in the coffin and have been trying to convince myself that it really isn’t him in the coffin. So these are my thoughts. I haven’t had time to read all the theories since the finale so forgive me if something like this has been posted already.

I think that Ben and Locke together hatched a plan to get all the losties to return to the island. It was clearly important to Locke that Jack not leave the island and if he convinced Jack to stay then no one would have gotten on that helicopter. We know that Locke under the name of Bentham visited Jack, Kate, Hurley and Walt but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the body in the coffin was his. I believe that Locke is so desperate to get the losties to return to save the island that he and Ben stage his death and funeral to guilt Jack into returning. And if Jack returns, then the others will follow along. At least that’s what Ben and Locke think. Now Ben is supposedly not able to return to the island so I think Locke sought Ben and offered him the chance to return if he succeeds in getting Jack and the gang to all return to the island. Particularly since he couldn’t convince them himself. Ben has enormous power off the island obviously and he would be able to pull this stunt off. The hard part is rounding everyone up.

Sayid and Ben have worked together against Widmore and I believe that Ben convinced Sayid that the losties are in danger . So he assigned Sayid to collect Hurley from the institution and to kill one of Widmore’s men parked in a car outside the institution. At exactly 8:15 p.m. strangely enough. Who’s to say this poor fellow wasn’t set up to sit there by Ben and really wasn’t one of Widmore’s men. Sayid told Hurley that “they said it was suicide” about Locke’s death expressing the sentiment it was a lie. This makes me believe that Sayid either knows Locke is not dead or that Locke was murdered but set up to appear as a suicide. I’m guessing the latter.

Now I know Sun would not return to the island on Jack’s request but Hurley remained in touch with Sun post crash so he and Sayid will be able to convince her to return telling her she is in danger and must be protected. As for Kate this will prove difficult. She will be torn between the message on the phone just before Claire appeared in Aaron’s room and the message Claire gave her about not brinigng Aaron back to the island.

As for Walt he didn’t mention anything to Hurley about Locke insisting he return. Either he is included and must return or he is still a child and like Aaron and he is not to return.

I also believe that Ben has his own agenda unbeknownst to Locke. He plans to regain control of the island. Ben is still bitter about being punted from the island and will reclaim his post. As much as I love Locke, he had his naive moments and I think he’ll be conned again. Ben is not finished playing chess with Widmore and avenging Alex’s death. Nothing beats control of the island.

I believe that the body in the coffin is a fake, a dummy used only to convince Jack that Locke killed himself to guilt him into returning to the island. The following are some of the reasons I think this. The coffin is too small to fit the real Locke and his legs would have to be cut off from the knees down to fit in it. The large scar over Locke’s right eye is also mysteriously missing. I doubt any amount of funeral parlour make up would hide that massive crease. And Ben seems to mysteriously show up at the funeral parlour so he had to have planned it. Locke did visit all the losties to send them the message they have to return and likely did this by teleporting through space and time but he returned to the island. While Ben and Jack are busy rounding up the losties, Locke is waiting for them to return to the island.

I like this idea better than the idea of Locke’s dead body being brought back to the island to be resurrected. Also I just can’t believe that Locke could be killed off the island if his goal (which would be defined by Jacob) is to bring everyone back to the island. But then again who knows, this is Lost afterall.

What makes you think it was a dummy? A dummy would be easily noticeable, especially in a coffin. Jack said that Jeremy Bentham went to see him, so I’m convinced he was off the island when he died and that the body in the coffin isn’t a dummy.

Also, the coffin isn’t too small; John isn’t a very tall man. Although, I like some of the points you make.

You are thinking too laterally. Of course Locke is dead, but he’s not going to remain that way…that’s the whole point of time travel. The question is did he know he was going to die. According the the Time Travelling Island Theory if you lived once then die when you go back in time you become half there (like Jacob) because you still exist in another timeline. So maybe this is the only way Locke thought he could get them back, knowing that when he goes back, he’ll be like Jacob. Maybe that’s why Claire might be warning against bringing him back to the island. Locke was fairly adamant that Jack shouldn’t go where as Ben was pushing them out the door so to speak.

” I believe that Locke is so desperate to get the losties to return to save the island that he and Ben stage his death and funeral to guilt Jack into returning.” Men, you need to rewatch Season 3 finale, Jack was trying to go back before finding out about Bentham’s death. Remember he read the newspaper in the plane. The new’s clip caused Jack to attempt suicide after him making a phone call in his car. I’ve always thought that he was calling Kate, but maybe he was actually calling Jeremy to check if the newspaper was right. Back to the point, Bentham’s or Locke’s death only caused Jack a huge amount of frustration which led to him attempting suicide, of course he never got the chance to jump because he had to save the woman and her child. I don’t see Locke coming back to life, maybe we’ll have some Yemi-like Locke.

DrJack, you’re absolutely right…Jack wanted back long before the whole Locke visiting him and “suiciding.”

Sadly, I think that Locke is indeed dead, and will not be coming back to life on the island, but I’m OK being proven wrong on that one. My money though, he’s dead as a desk. And he’ll stay that way.

Personally, I think Ben may be behind Locke’s death via Sayid…Sayid looks way too proud of himself when he says to Hurley “They said it was suicide.” It just reaked of weirdness to me.

Finally, the why on Ben’s doing this…He needs to this to get back to the island himself. Every one of us is really stupid if we believe Ben when he says he can’t get back to the Island. That creepy screwball has told us the truth what….maybe 5 times? Anyone know how many times he’s said “I lied’ cus i bet that’s almost as many times as he’s told the truth. He can get back, and he needs everyone who left when he moved the Island to do so.

All in all, you had a well thought out post, Kudos to you.

great post yingirl. I like the idea of a fake locke. And if you really look at the alternate endings, all of them looked fake in the coffins. Great work.

Thanks lockeko and chemjohn. I’m crushed at the thought Locke actually dies and I’m really hoping it itsn’t actually him in the coffin. Although like drjack said, Jack wanted to go back even before he got the visit, I believe that Bentham conveyed to Jack that he has to go back with all of the 06 as well and Jack knew he couldn’t pull it off, causing him to be desperate and suicidal. Which by the way I don’t think Jack would have been able to kill himself, like Michael the island still needs him.

good point yin. i think Dr Jacks point about jack wanting to go back prior to his Bentham meeting is a production Error. nicely pointed out by DrJack.
