The backpack Jack wears changes several times from between a grey black sports type and a black leather type.

— DonaldTwain

I am new to the site so I hope this hasn’t been mentioned before. I have tried to find anything on the search engine and have checked the Lostpedia episode guide and can’t see any reference. Forgive me if I have missed it. Basically I was watching Deus Ex Machina the other night and noticed a weird thing about the conversation Jack has with Sawyer when he first asks about his migraines. The backpack Jack wears changes several times from between a grey black sports type and a black leather type.

This could be construed as a continuity error, I realise sometimes another shoot is taken later if parts of the first takes are unsatisfactory, but to me the error is too clear not to notice when editing happens. It would seem a bit bizarre to leave this in rather than go with one of the two cuts. To me it appears to be a deliberate error, and if so it leads to one of two conclusions.

We could decide that this means we are watching two very slightly different versions of more or less the same event happening. This would fit in quite nicely with the idea a lot of people seem to be going with, that in the pilot episode, and other occasions, Jack is not experiencing events for the first time. This all seems a bit too much of a jump to me. without some other major plot contrivances.

Personally I think it may point more to the fact that what we are shown are often subjective views of events. In this case Jacks backpack seems to be a leather type whenever we see from or behind Sawyer. This makes sense as Sawyer is suffering from short sight, often Sawyer himself is in shot when this occurs. I believe this represents the view from Sawyers minds eye so to speak. I haven’t noticed any other instances in which this is prominent so far, apart from when apparitions have appeared to various characters.

I would like to hear if anyone has another take or two on this scene, just don’t be too rough.

Matthew Fox: Hey guys, this wasn’t the bag I was just holding in the last shot.

TPTB: Oh, it’s ok. No one will notice!

Though some may be genuine continuity errors others just seem like they are screaming CLUE!

And your theory was a good take on it. +1

no. Its an error. I am a dedicated hater of the idea the “jack is not living on the island for the first time” thing. it’s got too many holes in it. Why would he leave the island and realise it was a mistake if he had already live it before? I think it’s a huge cop out of actually thinking up a meaningful ending.

I agree with IamJacob, I think that all of those ‘timeloop - jacks been here before’ theories are complete rubbish. If Jack had been through all of this before then why was he so surprised that Ethan was not on the flight manifest? Why was he relying on Kate to track Ethan(when he kidnapped Claire & Charlie) instead of finding the trail himself?
