when Hugo confronts Dave at the end of the episode, Dave just lays it out for him. I think that what Dave tells him about the island is true.

— QuickChris

I’m sure their are similar theories about this, but I didn’t see any with Hugo and Dave. I think there is more to the conversation between them than just face value of hurley being tested.

Off the island, Dave is there to comfort Hugo. Dave is manifested as Hurley’s drive to indulge and block out the accident of him killing those people on the deck. So on the island Dave comes back because Hurley can’t cope with all of the food that had landed. Dave doesn’t necessary lie to Hugo, he just stops him from getting better. So by that rational when Hugo confronts Dave at the end of the episode, Dave just lays it out for him. I think that what Dave tells him about the island is true. Dave never has doubted reality before, meaning off the island he never tried to convince Hugo that he wasn’t real or that the hospital wasn’t real. So when they finally talk on the island, he tells hugo that nothing is real, neither Dave, the island, or anything, that it was all in his head. This is where I think there is some truth. But to help explain it, I will use one of the books that was seen in the hatch that Desmond was reading before he took off in Season 2, “The Third Policeman.” The main character in the book, follows one of the policemen to this place that was like the hatches. They took an elevator down below the ground and once they got there, they could never age, or get sick, or anything, time would stop. Now the Policeman showed the main guy that in this place you could manifest anything that you want.(the metaphorical box) But once you leave this place, everything you tried to take with you, that you manifested would disappear. Anyway, so Dave on the island is hurley’s test like everyone else. Although I don’t think everything on the island is just a manifestation, there are things that are real. Just that you can manifest things on the island, this theory can also explain how Locke’s father got there. After Dave told hugo the “truth.” the island began looking weirder as they made their way to the cliff, because Hugo realized that he can manifest things. But Dave was a test and just wanted Hugo to kill himself. I just think that this was a clue to the unique properties of the island. And maybe someone who was more “special” can manifest things better or control the island more like Locke or Walt.

i was determined not to like this as it all seemed bit “hurley’s still in the institution & its all in his head” at the beginning…
