“See you in another life, yeah?”- Desmond to Jack (“Man of Science, Man of Faith”)
— shoegirl927
This is an old theory of mine from on here but I could not figure out how to edit that one and have it appear under “latest” so I re-named the title and added my new info. Everyone was talking about time loops so here are my thoughts from awhile ago.
Maybe we’ve never seen what happened the first time…during the flashbacks(which I think some are people going back to that moment in their lives like Desmond did). And Maybe we have never seen what happened on the island the first time around. Is it possible that flashbacks are actually the “conscious” traveling back to that time? I know the argument would be “ Well why didn’t they change things?” Maybe they did IN FACT change something. Maybe what we see IS that person trying to change things for the better. Is it possible that we never saw what originally happened to not know that what we are seeing is different than before. When Desmond sees Jack at the stadium during a flashback it seems to me that Desmond knows him , knows about his life and knows they will meet on the island. Maybe the first time Desmond saw Jack he didn’t speak to him at all for all we know. Desmond even says to Jack “See you in another life, yeah?” How Desmond traveled in the episode “The Constant” made me believe that maybe everyone has the ability to go back in time but because Desmond was so close to the explosion it affected him more. The rest of them could have the ability by simply being on the island.
This could also be said of “on-island” time also. All we ever hear John Locke saying to Jack is something along the lines of “You’re not supposed to do this” or when Jack said he dosen’t believe in fate Locke says something like “You don’t now but you will”. All this would at least lead me to believe that Locke is in a loop somehow. Basically I am saying that just because WE are seeing things for the first time dosen’t mean that the way we are seeing it now is the way it has always been. Jack could have done a million things differently his first time there. He could have died within his first few days on the island(like the producers said) or DID he die his first time there? That means that Kate would have probably been the leader. Maybe she brought Jack back at some point who knows? Any theory along this line is very cool to me even if I don’t understand it completely.

Interesting…I kinda like the idea that we’ve never seen what originally happened. Hm.
“You’re not supposed to do this” - I really wish someone would ask how John knows what is “supposed” to happen! Ah, right, that’d be too easy. : )
NO NO NO!!! (bangs fist against high chair)
but seriously
If you want proof that what we have seen IS their first time on the island, look at their reactions when they first encounter smokie. Complete and utter terror of something completely completely unknown to them. Same with the Polar Bear. And the others. And pretty much everything.
I know what your saying and I agree with you that they are time travelling somehow …Im just not sure of the time line of events,,,it’s kinda hard to work all that out, which I think will make it more interesting to watch.
i think if one of them had been there before they’d just come out and say it. with all the crazy shinanigans that have happened already, i don’t think this would be recieved as too far fetched. it would be easy for one to prove it too by saying whats about to happen. i’m not too sure about all this time loop stuff, how are the producers going to make us interested in watching the same thing over, just slightly different? flashbacks seem the only way to go if there is some time loop, so i think at least we’ll see new stuff for the final 3 seasons
and also what magician said
magician,
I’m pretty much with you on this, but what about the possibility that we are seeing a mixture of first times and not first times. For example when we see them react to smokie it is a first time reaction, but when we see other scenes like john knowing that it’s about to start or stop raining, we’re seeing the 5th or 6th time.
Not sure if I even agree with it, but it’s worth thinking about.
By the way, on your screen name, are you a magician? I am.
Secrets-I’d never considered that! Suddenly the time loop thing seems very interesting.
And I wish I was a magician :(… but i do occasionally dabble in alchemy.
Secrets- that is a great idea. Seems very possible to me.
I believe in the writers and show runners on Lost. However, I don’t even know if they would be able to untangle the mess that would be created by seeing different parts from different loops. At the very least most of what we have seen is from the same loop. I would like to add that I really don’t want a loop. Also, most of you who talk about a loop don’t even know how they work. I would think that a major time travel event by multiple characters would be more likely than a loop.
