Here is something I’ve heard in the past, any clarification?

I was doing some theory reading when I came across someone saying that Jack’s character was supposed to be killed off in the pilot but because of his popularity amongst viewers he was not. Also, I heard that Kate was supposed to be the leader not Jack.

Does anyone know if this is true?

I highly doubt they planned to kill off jack in the pilot, because it is Mathew Fox. When Lost started Mathew Fox was one of the few actors who viewer migth have recognized already from other project he had done. Plus I do not understand how they planned to kill him off in the pilot but because of the popularity of his character he was not. This was the pilot, how was his character popular if no one had seeen him before the pilot aired.

    from IMDB:

Michael Keaton was considered for the part of Jack, but turned it down. Had he accepted, he would have been killed off in the pilot episode.

    AND

Originally Kate was supposed to have been a thirty something businesswoman whose husband had died in the crash. When Jack died in the original script Kate would have become the leader of the group.

I’ve also heard that the actor playing Sun was originally going to be Kate, and Benjamin Linus was only going to be in the show for a few episodes. But because Ben displayed such good acting skills, they pretty much promoted him to be one of the main characters. I think the writers are somewhat writing the story as they go along. They have the basic storyline set and that’s not going to change, but they are probably making minor changes every now and then.

Thank you all, I didn’t want to believe that they were planning on killing Jack.

I’m working on a theory that Kate is actually the leader what evil force is running this whole thing or at least she works for them, more on that later. Lostpedia says the pilot was written after Mathew Fox was hired to be Jack. They said orginally they were going to have the character of the doctor die, but they liked Mathew Fox and built things around him. So all this talk about ” Jack was going to die, I think it’s a clue” just isn’t true.

JJ always has females as lead roles,,,Alias Jennifer-…Felicity…Felicity.-.crossing Jorden Jorden- Lost…Jack? I would not at all be shocked if Kate had more to do with all this either,I dont beleave for a second they were going to kill Jack off though ,,never have

I think I agree with DAVE. I thought it was well accepted cannon that the doctor’s character was supposed to die.

I don’t believe that they ever intended on killing Jack, he is way too important to the storyline. From Lostpedia- Jack’s episode count so far is 77 (as of “There’s No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3”). Jack was the first character to ever have a flashback and a flashforward. The first episodes of seasons 1, 2, and 3 featured Jack’s flashbacks. Jack has had more flashbacks than any other character, with 9. He was also the first character to have a flashforward centered around him, in “Through the Looking Glass”, and later had one in season 4 in “Something Nice Back Home”, giving him a total of 13 centric episodes. Paulo appeared in fewer episodes than Jack has centric. As of “So It Begins”, Jack’s mobisode count is 5, which makes him one of the two most appearing mobisode characters, along with Michael with also 5 appearances. Jack has met all of the main characters.

And the producers want us to believe that they were gonna kill him off? No way. That would be alot of re-writing for a character that was supposed to die. Plus the producers have also stated that they knew where the story was going from the rip. If Jack was not supposed to be on the show very long how did they know the important plot points, because Jack seems very important to storyline even if it ends up he really isn’t our “main character”.

the quote this information is taken from is from the commentary on the pilot episode (at least in the swedish version) where some of the makers of lost says that the shot where we see the pilots body reflecting in the water below him it was originally supposed to be jacks body lying dead in the tree, but that some guys from the network told them that it would be crazy to kill of the character that so far in the pilot had been the audiences hero. So they rewrote his character, originally Kate was supposed to become the leader of the losties, but I guess they at this point more or less just had a basic idea of what would happen, and that characteristics and stuff could still be moved around easily from one character to another.
