And it is Widmore.
— MySonsNameisJacob
To kick things off, I’ll tell first how this theory came into shape. Okay it was somewhere in S4, I forgot the exact episode, Linus paid a visit to Widmore in his penthouse hotel room and they had a little chit-chat about him breaking the rules because he killed Alex and Widmore said that the Island is his to which Ben replied and I’m para-phrasing I forgot the exact lines, that he’ll never find it and he also said that its now a race between them in finding the location of the already moved Island.
After that episode, it got me thinking. What if Widmore has been on the Island before and he is actually a high-ranking Dharma official? Before the Purge happened and Ben was merely a son of a workman. Its possible right? I’ve read some other theories that Widmore is a former leader of the Others but I’m finding it hard to believe. Him being a Dharma member is actually a possibility. Now bear with me on this.
When Ben decided to join the Others they had a plan and that is to kill the Dharma habitants of the Island. So now we are at the day of the Purge and good ‘ol Charles is doing some Dharma stuff when the Others starts offing his people. And him, he has nowhere else to go and he had no choice but to go to the Orchid and in to that ice cavern and turn the wheel and teleport himself somewhere to avoid getting killed!
Now I know in that “Purge” episode back in S3 they didn’t actually show a purple sky which is an indication that the Island has moved but if you think about it if the writers decided to put the purple sky bit in that episode all we need to do is connect the dots and we already know that someone from Dharma got out. And it is Widmore.
Now if you look back in that penthouse conversation that they had it all makes sense. So now, its Ben along with the Oceanic Six against Widmore and his money and its a race on who’s gonna find the Island first.
There’s a catch though. It might not be Ben and the Oceanic Six because I just remembered that Sun actually approached Widmore and gave him her card. It might mean that she’ll help Widmore find the Island and her reasons why is beyond me. Maybe it will be all explained in season 5.
Also, if this theory has already been posted then kindly inform and I’ll edit this asap.

i like the idea that widmore ecaped the purge by moving the island himself.
I also like the idea that Widmore escaped the purge by moving the island himself (+1)
Does a purple sky really mean the the island is moving? That would mean that the island moved when the hatch imploded, and I don’t think that is true.
Not to mention widmore’s secondary protocol file has a dharma logo on it. and widmore knows ben will head for the orchid too. “charles widmore is a very smart man”
awesome! i love this theory! +1
When Widmore said the race is on he meant for him to find the island and Ben to find Penny.
i’m not too sure about this, i don’t think the writers would refrain from putting in the purple sky. if widmore moved the island, then there would be purple sky. also, when ben puts the metal into the “time machine/organic duplicator”, he blasts a hole in the wall to get to the wheel. there was no hole in the wall at first. maybe there’s another way to the wheel? but during that episode it seems the path to the wheel is very small and there aren’t other ways in.
The episode is “The Shape of Things to Come” and it is the 9th episode of the 4th season.
Thing about Charles Widmore is that back in the 70’s when Alvar Hanso and the DeGroots started the Dharma initiative, they contracted with Widmore and Paik Heavy industries to come to the island and help build the hatches. I think that Charles Widmore was head of his company and starting to catch word of the special properties of the island through his many workers there. This inspired Widmore to learn about the island and I think he eventually paid Thomas Middlewerk to take over the Hanso Foundation. Once he had Middlewerk in his pocket, he essentially became the owner of the Dharma Initiative.
Now I doubt all of the Dharma employees were aware of whom they were working for and what they were working for, but I think that when the purge occured, Ben was purging that Dharma group that was taking orders from Widmore himself, thus Ben took it all from Charles.
There really is no evidence that supports the island to have moved at the same time as the purge.
We do know that Widmore had financial dealings with Hanso so I think he became involved as a sponsor of the project. I do like the idea of Widmore using the wheel to escape the island, and just because we didn’t see an indication of the island moving during the purge episode, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen shortly after.
Its possible. And sun wants to help him most likely because she really wants Jin. Or its another crazy scheme masterminded by Ben.
Hmmmm nice, does the idea of Widmore having ‘nightmares’ compound your theory? I am dying to find out what induces those nightmares, and what they are about. Once again I agree with lost4815162342 concerning what ‘race is on’ for both Ben and Charles, but then looking for Penny and looking for the island seem inextricably linked…throw in mind travelling Des and there’s a story arc I am looking forward to seeing unfold.
